Tools you need for water pump on a 2013-2018 Toyota RAV4

Moderate · 3-4 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 14 mm wrench for belt tensioner
  3. Serpentine belt tool or long 3/8 breaker bar
  4. 21 mm socket for lug nuts
  5. Drain pan and funnel kit for coolant

Every XA40 RAV4 sold in North America uses the 2.5L 2AR-FE, so there is only one water pump setup to deal with. It is a belt-driven pump on the passenger side of the engine, not buried behind the timing chain cover, so this is a bolt-off job rather than an engine teardown. The catch is access: you work through the right front wheel well with the splash shield out, and the space between the engine and the frame rail is tight enough that many people end up loosening the alternator or its bracket to get the old pump out.

The mistake that causes comebacks is the refill, not the pump. This system traps air easily, and a RAV4 that overheats a week after a water pump job is almost always still full of air rather than leaking. Use a spill-free funnel, run it up to temperature with the heater on full hot, then recheck the level cold the next day. The second common mistake is cranking down the small 10 mm bolts into aluminum threads with an impact gun.

Differences within the 2013-2018 generation

No variation in this generation for North America; all XA40 RAV4 models use the 2.5L 2AR-FE with the same 10 mm water pump and pulley bolts. Overseas 2.0L and 2.2 D-4D variants use a different pump and bolt layout and are not covered here.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and let the engine cool completely. Never open a hot cooling system.
  2. Remove the engine cover and the radiator cap / reservoir cap to vent pressure.
  3. Place a drain pan under the radiator, open the drain cock at the lower driver side of the radiator, and drain the coolant. Expect roughly 4-5 quarts to come out; the block holds more.
  4. Loosen the right front lug nuts, lift the passenger front corner, support it on a jack stand, and remove the wheel.
  5. Remove the plastic inner fender splash shield (10 mm bolts, #2 Phillips screws and push pins) to expose the accessory belt and crank pulley.
  6. Note the belt routing or photograph it. Put a 14 mm wrench or belt tool on the automatic tensioner, rotate it to release tension, and slip the serpentine belt off.
  7. If access is blocked, loosen or unbolt the alternator and swing it aside, or remove the alternator bracket. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first if you unbolt any alternator wiring.
  8. Remove the four 10 mm bolts holding the water pump pulley. Use an impact driver or hold the pulley with a strap wrench so it does not spin.
  9. Remove the water pump mounting bolts (10 mm heads, note that lengths differ and lay them out in order). Break the pump free and pull it out. Expect a little residual coolant.
  10. Scrape and clean the block sealing surface with a plastic or brass scraper, then wipe it with cleaner. Do not gouge the aluminum and do not let debris fall into the coolant passage.
  11. Fit the new gasket dry on the new pump, set the pump in place, and start all bolts by hand. Tighten evenly in a crosswise pattern to spec.
  12. Reinstall the pulley, the alternator or bracket if removed, and route the serpentine belt exactly as noted. Release the tensioner and confirm the belt is centered on every pulley.
  13. Reinstall the splash shield and wheel, torque the lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern, and lower the vehicle.
  14. Close the radiator drain cock hand tight. Fill with Toyota pink SLLC using a spill-free funnel at the radiator neck.
  15. Start the engine with the funnel in place, run the heater on full hot, and let it idle until the thermostat opens and the level stops dropping. Squeeze the upper hose to help purge air.
  16. Shut off, let it cool, top off the radiator and set the reservoir to the FULL line. Check for leaks at the pump weep hole and drain cock.
  17. Drive it, then recheck the coolant level cold the next day and again after a few days. Air pockets in this system often take two heat cycles to work out.

Watch out

Socket sizes for this generation (21 mm lugs, 10 mm pump/pulley/shield bolts, 14 mm tensioner) match the 2AR-FE layout across 2013-2018, but confirm the exact water pump bolt torque values and coolant capacity in the Toyota service manual for your year before final tightening.

Frequently asked

How do I know the water pump is failing on a RAV4 2.5?

Look for a pink crusty residue or wet streak below the pump on the passenger side of the block, coolant dripping onto the belt or splash shield, a low reservoir with no other visible leak, or a bearing growl that changes with engine speed. A weeping pump often only shows itself after the engine is fully warm and pressurized.

Do I have to remove the timing chain cover?

No. On the 2AR-FE the water pump is externally mounted and driven by the serpentine belt, so it comes off with the belt, the pulley and a handful of 10 mm bolts. No timing work is involved.

How much coolant does the job take?

Draining the radiator gets you roughly 4-5 quarts out; total system capacity is about 6.5-7 quarts, so buy two gallons of pre-mixed Toyota pink SLLC to be safe and have some left for topping off over the next week.

Should I replace the thermostat and belt at the same time?

Yes if the pump was leaking or the vehicle has over 100k miles. The system is already drained, the thermostat housing is nearby on the lower radiator hose side, and coolant that dripped on the serpentine belt will have softened it.
