Every US-market XA40 RAV4 from 2013-2018 uses the 2.5L 2AR-FE four-cylinder, so there is only one layout to deal with. The alternator lives high on the front-right of the block behind the serpentine belt, and almost all of the work happens from the top of the engine bay. The hardware is simple - two 14 mm bolts, a 10 mm B-terminal nut, and one plug - but the space between the alternator, the upper radiator hose and the coolant reservoir is tight, so a 14 mm swivel socket and a long extension matter more than muscle.
The mistakes people make are electrical, not mechanical: leaving the battery connected and arcing a wrench off the B-terminal stud, or cranking that same nut down with a ratchet and snapping the stud on a brand new unit. The second most common issue is a belt that looks seated but has one rib riding off the edge of the tensioner or A/C pulley - check every groove by eye before you start it. Toyota does not require any battery registration or scan tool coding for this job.
| Item | Type | |

| Socket set 10, 12, 14 mm 6-point, 3/8 in drive Battery terminal, B-terminal nut, splash shield bolts and the two alternator mounting bolts. | Required | shop |
| Ratchet 3/8 in drive, plus stubby ratchet Main driver for all mounting hardware; stubby helps at the rear mounting bolt. | Required | shop |
| Extension set 3, 6 and 10 in, 3/8 in drive Reaches the lower alternator bolt past the belt and hoses. | Required | shop |
| Swivel/wobble socket 14 mm universal joint socket, 3/8 in drive Lets you get an angle on the alternator bolts around the coolant hose. | Required | shop |
| Serpentine belt tensioner wrench 14 mm, long-handle serpentine belt tool or 3/8 in breaker bar with 14 mm socket Rotates the automatic tensioner to release the drive belt. | Required | shop |
| Combination wrench set 10, 12, 14 mm Holds nuts and gets into places a socket will not fit. | Recommended | shop |
| Floor jack and jack stands 2 ton minimum Lift the front to remove the engine undercover and access from below if needed. | Required | shop |
| Lug wrench or impact socket 21 mm, 1/2 in drive Only if you remove the right front wheel for extra room. | Recommended | shop |
| Push-pin clip pliers / trim tool Removes the plastic clips on the engine undercover and inner fender liner without breaking them. | Recommended | shop |
| Phillips screwdriver and flat blade #2 Phillips Undercover screws and releasing the alternator connector lock tab. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 3/8 in drive, 10-80 ft-lb Correct torque on mounting bolts and the B-terminal nut into aluminum threads. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/2 in drive, up to 100 ft-lb Lug nuts if the wheel comes off. | Recommended | shop |
| Multimeter DC volts Confirms the old unit is bad and verifies 13.8-14.5 V charging afterward. | Recommended | shop |
| Pry bar or long screwdriver 12-18 in Gently coaxes the alternator off its locating dowel and out of the bracket. | Recommended | shop |
| Alternator 2AR-FE, 130 A (100 A on some trims) with matching pulley The replacement unit; match amperage and connector to the old one. | Parts | shop |

Every 2013-2018 RAV4 in North America has the 2.5L 2AR-FE, so sizes are the same across the generation; only the alternator output differs (roughly 100 A on base trims, 130 A on higher trims and with heavier electrical loads). The 2016-2018 RAV4 Hybrid has no conventional alternator - it charges through the hybrid transaxle's motor-generator, and this procedure does not apply. Overseas 2.0L and 2.2 D-4D versions use a different bracket and belt layout.
| Alternator mounting bolts (both) | 39 ft-lb (53 Nm) |
| Alternator B-terminal nut | 7 ft-lb (9.8 Nm) - do not overtighten |
| Battery negative terminal nut | 4 ft-lb (5.4 Nm) |
| Drive belt tensioner assembly bolt | verify in the service manual |
| Front wheel lug nuts | 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) |
The 10 mm / 14 mm socket sizes, 14 mm tensioner, and 39 ft-lb mounting bolt torque are correct for the 2AR-FE in this generation, but confirm bolt lengths and the tensioner assembly torque against a service manual for your exact build, and verify your alternator's amperage rating before ordering.
Most people get it out from the top after removing the engine undercover and moving the coolant reservoir or upper hose bracket. Pulling the right front wheel and inner fender liner just gives you a second angle on the lower mounting bolt if your hands do not fit.
Both alternator mounting bolts take a 14 mm socket, and the B-terminal nut and battery terminal are 10 mm. The belt tensioner pulley bolt is also 14 mm.
Yes, if it has any cracking, glazing or more than about 60,000 miles on it. The belt is already off and costs $25-40, and the labor to do it separately is the same as this whole job.
Typically $500-900 with parts, depending on whether they use a Denso OE unit or a reman. The alternator itself is usually $250-500, with about 1.5-2 hours of labor.
