Tools you need for alternator on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry

Moderate · 1.5-3 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 12 mm socket for B+ terminal nut
  3. Breaker bar or long ratchet, 3/8 in
  4. 10 mm socket for battery and covers
  5. 21 mm socket for lug nuts

On the XV50 Camry this is one of the easier alternators to change. The 2.5L 2AR-FE puts the unit high on the front-right of the engine, so with the engine cover and intake hose out of the way you can reach both 14 mm mount bolts from above; only the belt and the lower bolt really need wheel-well access. The 3.5L 2GR-FE sits lower and tighter, so plan on pulling the right front wheel and fender liner and doing half the job from underneath.

The belt uses an automatic tensioner, so there is no adjusting bolt — you swing the tensioner with a 14 mm socket on a breaker bar, pull the belt, and let it snap back at the end. The two things people get wrong: forgetting to disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the always-live B+ nut, and overtightening that same 12 mm nut and cracking the new regulator. Also photograph the belt routing before it comes off.

Differences within the 2012-2017 generation

2.5L 2AR-FE: alternator accessible mostly from above after removing the engine cover and intake hose; 14 mm mount bolts, 14 mm tensioner. 3.5L 2GR-FE: same 14 mm and 12 mm sizes but mounted lower on the front of the block, so wheel and fender-liner removal plus a swivel extension is effectively mandatory. Camry Hybrid (2AR-FXE): no belt-driven alternator — charging is via MG1 and the DC-DC converter, so this procedure does not apply.

Torque specs

Wheel lug nuts76 ft-lb (103 Nm)
Alternator mounting bolts (2AR-FE and 2GR-FE)verify in the service manual (roughly 40 ft-lb / 52 Nm class fastener)
Alternator B+ output terminal nutverify in the service manual (low value, about 7 ft-lb / 10 Nm — do not overtighten)
Battery terminal clamp nut4 ft-lb (5.4 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the alternator is actually the fault: load-test the battery, check the B+ cable and fusible link, and measure charging voltage at idle (should be about 13.5-14.8 V). If the car is a Camry Hybrid, stop — there is no belt-driven alternator.
  2. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, loosen the right front lug nuts, then lift the front right corner and set it on a jack stand.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10 mm socket (use a memory saver first if you want to keep presets). Tuck the cable aside.
  4. Remove the right front wheel. Remove the plastic engine undercover and the front section of the inner fender liner (10 mm bolts and plastic pin clips) to see the belt and lower alternator area.
  5. On the 2.5L, remove the engine cover and loosen the air intake hose/resonator at the throttle body with a Phillips or 10 mm driver and move it out of the way. On the 3.5L, remove the intake plumbing over the front of the engine as needed.
  6. Note or photograph the serpentine belt routing. Put a 14 mm socket on a breaker bar (or the serpentine belt tool) on the automatic tensioner bolt, rotate the tensioner to slacken the belt, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  7. Pull back the rubber boot on the B+ stud, remove the 12 mm nut and lift the heavy output cable off the stud. Keep the nut safe.
  8. Unplug the alternator field/regulator connector (squeeze the tab; the plastic is brittle when old).
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts with a 14 mm socket — one through-bolt at the top and one at the bottom pivot/bracket. Support the alternator as the second bolt comes out.
  10. Work the alternator out — usually upward past the intake on the 2.5L, and downward/forward through the wheel well on the 3.5L. Wiggle rather than pry against aluminum.
  11. Compare the new unit to the old one: pulley diameter and rib count, connector type, amperage, and clocking of the B+ stud.
  12. Set the new alternator in place, start both mount bolts by hand, then torque them to spec. Never force a cross-threaded bolt into the aluminum bracket ears.
  13. Clean the B+ stud and cable ring terminal, install the cable, torque the 12 mm nut lightly to spec, add a little dielectric grease and reseat the rubber boot. Reconnect the field connector until it clicks.
  14. Install the belt (new one if replacing) following your routing photo, leaving the alternator pulley last, then release the tensioner slowly and verify every rib is seated in every pulley groove.
  15. Reinstall the intake plumbing, fender liner, undercover, wheel (76 ft-lb in a star pattern), and the negative battery cable.
  16. Start the engine and check for belt squeal or wobble. Measure battery voltage at idle and at 2000 rpm; it should read 13.5-14.8 V and the charge light must go out. Let it idle a few minutes so the ECM relearns idle after the battery disconnect.

Watch out

The 10/12/14 mm fastener sizes and 21 mm lug nuts are standard for the XV50 Camry and its 2AR-FE and 2GR-FE engines, but confirm the alternator mount bolt and B+ nut torque values in a Toyota service manual before final tightening.

Frequently asked

How much does a shop charge to replace a Camry alternator?

Typically $450-800 parts and labor for the 2.5L, toward the top of that range or higher on the 3.5L V6 or with a Toyota/Denso OE unit. Labor is usually quoted around 1.0-1.8 hours.

Do I have to remove the serpentine belt to change the alternator?

Yes. Rotate the automatic tensioner with a 14 mm socket on a breaker bar to slacken the belt and slip it off the alternator pulley. Replace the belt while it is off if it is cracked, glazed or has over about 60,000 miles on it.

Does the 2012-2017 Camry Hybrid have an alternator?

No. The hybrid uses MG1 inside the transaxle plus a DC-DC converter to charge the 12 V battery, so there is no belt-driven alternator to replace. Charging faults on the hybrid point to the converter, the HV system or the 12 V battery itself.

Do I need to reset or program anything after replacing the alternator?

No coding or battery registration is required on the XV50 Camry. After the battery disconnect you may lose radio presets and the engine may idle roughly for a few minutes while the ECM relearns; let it idle and drive it normally.
