Tools you need for front struts on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry

Moderate · 2-3 hours for the pair · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 19 mm socket and wrench, 1/2 in drive
  2. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 21 mm lug nut socket
  4. Torque wrench, 1/2 in drive, 150 ft-lb
  5. Floor jack and 2 jack stands

The XV50 Camry is one of the friendlier cars for front struts. Three 14 mm nuts at the top of the tower and two 19 mm bolts into the steering knuckle are the whole fastener list, and with complete quick-strut assemblies you never touch a compressed spring. The only real fight is the pair of 19 mm knuckle bolts, which corrode into the bracket sleeves and are torqued around 156 ft-lb from the factory.

The 2.5 four-cylinder, the 3.5 V6 and the hybrid all share the same front suspension layout and the same fastener sizes, so the tools do not change engine to engine; only the strut part number does. The thing people get wrong is skipping the alignment, or torquing the knuckle bolts with the suspension hanging free and no support under the hub, which stresses the CV joint and can leave camber off. Support the knuckle with a jack, torque to spec, then get the front toe set.

Differences within the 2012-2017 generation

Fastener sizes are identical on the 2.5 2AR-FE, 3.5 2GR-FE and the hybrid: 14 mm upper mount nuts, 19 mm strut-to-knuckle bolts, 21 mm lug nuts. Only the strut assemblies themselves differ by engine, trim (SE/SE Sport has firmer valving) and hybrid, so order by exact VIN or trim.

Torque specs

Strut (shock absorber) to steering knuckle bolts/nuts, 19 mmabout 156 ft-lb (212 Nm); verify in the service manual
Upper strut mount nuts to body, 14 mm (3 per side)29 ft-lb (39 Nm)
Strut rod center nut (only if reusing mount)verify in the service manual
Brake hose / ABS harness bracket bolt on strut约 14 ft-lb (19 Nm); verify in the service manual
Wheel lug nuts (21 mm)76 ft-lb (103 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and loosen the front lug nuts a half turn while the car is still down.
  2. Raise the front of the car at the factory jack points and set it on jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Spray penetrating oil on the two 19 mm strut-to-knuckle bolts and let it soak while you work up top.
  4. Under the hood, remove any plastic cowl trim or covers over the strut towers. On the driver side note the wiper cowl edge; on the passenger side move harness clips aside as needed.
  5. Loosen but do not remove the three 14 mm nuts on the top of the strut mount. Leave them finger tight for now.
  6. At the wheel, unclip the ABS wheel speed sensor wire and brake hose bracket from the strut body (usually one 10 or 12 mm bolt plus clips).
  7. Support the steering knuckle with the floor jack so it cannot drop, then remove the two 19 mm strut-to-knuckle bolts: 19 mm socket on the nut, 19 mm wrench on the bolt head. Tap them out with a drift if they are stuck.
  8. Separate the knuckle from the strut bracket (a small pry bar helps), then hang the knuckle with a bungee so the CV axle and brake hose are not loaded.
  9. Remove the three 14 mm upper nuts and lower the strut assembly out through the wheel well.
  10. Compare old and new assemblies: mount orientation, spring seat index, and the bracket/hose tab must match. If reusing the old upper mount, hold the strut rod with a 6 mm hex while removing the center nut.
  11. Feed the new assembly up into the tower, line up the studs, and start the three 14 mm nuts by hand. Torque to 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  12. Jack the knuckle up into the strut bracket, insert both 19 mm bolts from the correct side (nuts face inboard as removed), and snug them.
  13. Torque the knuckle bolts to about 156 ft-lb (212 Nm) with the suspension supported. Reattach the ABS wire and brake hose bracket.
  14. Repeat on the other side. Never leave one side hanging with both struts out.
  15. Reinstall the wheels, lower the car, and torque lug nuts to 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) in a star pattern.
  16. Reinstall cowl trim, bounce the front end, then test drive and get a front alignment (toe, and camber check).

Watch out

The 14 mm upper nuts, 19 mm knuckle bolts and 21 mm lug nuts are correct for the XV50 Camry across 2.5, 3.5 and hybrid; confirm the high knuckle-bolt torque and the brake bracket bolt figure in a 2012-2017 Camry service manual before final tightening.

Frequently asked

Do I need a spring compressor to change front struts on a 2012-2017 Camry?

No, if you buy complete strut assemblies (quick struts) that already include the spring, upper mount and bearing. You only need a spring compressor if you are reusing the old spring or mount on a bare strut cartridge.

What size are the front strut bolts on an XV50 Camry?

Three 14 mm nuts hold the upper mount to the strut tower, and two 19 mm bolt/nut pairs hold the strut to the steering knuckle. Lug nuts are 21 mm.

Is an alignment required after replacing Camry front struts?

Yes. Unbolting the strut from the knuckle changes camber and toe, so have a front alignment done afterward; expect $80-120 at most shops.

Can I replace just one front strut?

You can, but struts wear together and a single new unit on one side will give uneven ride height and handling. Replace them in pairs, and replace the rear shocks if they are original at high mileage.
