Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry

Easy · 20-45 minutes per side · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 3/8 in ratchet with 6 in extension
  3. Phillips #2 screwdriver
  4. Trim/clip removal tool
  5. Flashlight or headlamp

On the XV50 Camry the low beam itself is a tool-free quarter-turn H11 bulb, but Toyota gave you no room to reach it. The driver's side is blocked by the battery and intake snorkel, and the passenger's side by the washer filler neck and coolant bottle. Most owners either pull back the inner fender liner and work from the wheel well, or take the three 10 mm bolts out and lift the whole headlight forward - the latter takes 10 extra minutes and turns a knuckle-shredding job into an easy one.

The thing people get wrong is the bulb type on later cars. 2015-2017 XLE and XSE models often left the factory with sealed LED projector low beams that have no bulb to change, so check for a round rubber dust cap on the back of the housing before you buy anything. The second mistake is not fully reseating that dust cap, which is why so many XV50 headlights end up fogged and hazy inside.

Differences within the 2012-2017 generation

Bulb sizes and fastener sizes are identical across the 2.5 2AR-FE, 3.5 2GR-FE and the hybrid - H11 low, 9005 high, 10 mm bolts. The only real difference is access: 2AR-FE and hybrid cars have a bulkier airbox/intake on the driver's side, while the 2GR-FE V6 crowds the passenger side more, so which side is worse depends on your engine. Trim matters more than engine: 2015-2017 XLE/XSE with factory LED low beams have no serviceable low-beam bulb.

Torque specs

Battery negative terminal nutabout 45 in-lb (5 Nm) - snug, do not overtighten the lead clamp
Headlight assembly mounting bolts (10 mm)verify in the service manual (snug only, they thread into plastic/sheet metal)
Fender liner screwshand tight only

How the job goes

  1. Turn the headlights off, switch off the ignition and let the bulbs cool for a few minutes - halogen capsules run hot enough to burn.
  2. Confirm which bulb type you have: halogen cars have a round rubber dust cap on the back of the projector; 2015-2017 XLE/XSE with factory LED low beams have a sealed module and no serviceable bulb.
  3. Open the hood and look at the back of the headlight housing. Passenger side: the washer fluid filler neck and coolant reservoir crowd the outboard edge. Driver side: the battery and air intake snorkel block access.
  4. Easiest route on the driver's side: disconnect the battery negative terminal with a 10 mm socket, remove the battery cover and, if needed, pull the air intake snorkel/resonator off its clips to open up hand room.
  5. Alternative route (often faster on the passenger side): turn the wheel inward, remove the Phillips screws and plastic push-pin clips along the top of the inner fender liner with a trim tool, and peel the liner back to reach the bulb from the wheel well.
  6. If access is still hopeless, remove the whole headlight: pull the plastic clips along the top of the bumper cover edge, remove the three 10 mm bolts (top, inboard, and the one near the fender), then ease the housing forward off its locating pin and unplug the connectors.
  7. Pull the round rubber dust cap off the low-beam bore, then unplug the bulb connector by pressing its lock tab and pulling straight back.
  8. Rotate the H11 bulb socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise and withdraw it straight out of the housing. Do not twist the housing or pry on the projector lens.
  9. Wearing gloves, wipe the new H11 glass with an alcohol wipe, add a light dab of dielectric grease to the connector terminals, and insert the bulb so its tabs line up with the notches in the housing. Turn clockwise until it stops.
  10. Reconnect the connector until the lock clicks, then seat the rubber dust cap fully and evenly all the way around - a poorly seated cap is the number one cause of moisture inside XV50 housings.
  11. Reinstall whatever you removed: headlight bolts and bumper clips, fender liner screws and clips, air intake, battery cover, then reconnect the battery negative terminal.
  12. Test low beam, high beam and turn signal, and check the beam cutoff on a wall. Aim adjusters are on top of the housing if the beam moved during removal. If the battery was disconnected, expect to reset the clock and radio presets; the engine may idle oddly for a minute or two while it relearns.

Watch out

H11 low beam and 9005 high beam are correct for all halogen XV50 Camrys including the hybrid, and the fasteners you touch are 10 mm plus #2 Phillips; double-check your trim for factory LED low beams (2015-2017 XLE/XSE) before buying bulbs, and confirm headlight bolt torque in the FSM if you remove the housing.

Frequently asked

What size low-beam bulb does a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry use?

Halogen-equipped XV50 Camrys use an H11 55 W bulb for the low beam and a 9005 (HB3) for the high beam. 2015-2017 XLE and XSE models with factory LED projectors have no replaceable low-beam bulb.

Do I have to remove the headlight assembly or the battery to change it?

Not strictly, but on the driver's side most people disconnect the battery negative with a 10 mm socket and shift the intake snorkel out of the way. If your hands don't fit, removing the three 10 mm headlight bolts and the bumper-edge clips gets the housing out in about 10 minutes.

Can I reach the bulb through the wheel well instead?

Yes, and it is often the quickest route on the passenger side. Turn the wheel inward, remove the Phillips screws and push-pin clips along the top of the inner fender liner, peel it back, and you can reach the dust cap from underneath.

Can I put LED bulbs in the stock halogen housing?

You can physically fit them, but the halogen projector isn't designed for an LED emitter, so beam pattern and cutoff suffer and oncoming glare is common. Some LEDs also need a decoder to avoid flicker or a bulb-out message, and they are not DOT compliant for on-road use.
