Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla

Must-have tools
H11 halogen bulb (low beam)
10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
Nitrile gloves
Phillips screwdriver #2
On the E170 Corolla the low beam is a plain H11 halogen capsule on nearly every trim, and the swap itself takes about two minutes once you can reach it. The problem is reach: the driver side sits right behind the air cleaner box and intake snorkel, and the passenger side is crowded by the washer filler neck and coolant reservoir. People with big hands usually give up on the blind approach and pull the headlight assembly with four 10 mm bolts, which sounds worse than it is and takes maybe 15 minutes.
What varies is the lamp itself. L, LE, LE Eco and standard S models use halogen H11 low beams with a 9005/HB3 high beam. S Premium and some late-build S Plus cars got factory LED low-beam projectors that have no bulb at all - if there is no rubber dust cap behind the lens, you need a whole assembly, not a bulb. The mistake to avoid: handling the new bulb bare-handed, and then not fully seating the rubber dust cap, which is what leads to the foggy headlight housings you see on so many of these cars.

Socket wrench and socket 10 mm 6-point socket, 1/4 in drive with 3 in extension Removes the headlight assembly mounting bolts and air intake bracket bolts.
Both the 1.8 2ZR-FE and 2ZR-FAE (LE Eco, with Valvematic) use the same headlight housings and the same H11 low beam and 9005 high beam, and the same 10 mm housing bolts. The only real difference is airbox and intake ducting shape on the driver side, which changes how much you have to move aside for hand access.

How the job goes
Turn the headlights off, let the bulb cool, and open the hood. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal is optional but a good idea if you are pulling the whole housing.
Identify your setup: if the low beam is a clear projector lens with a bulb access cap on the back, you have halogen H11. If it is a sealed LED projector (S Premium), stop - the unit is not serviceable and requires a new headlight assembly.
Try the in-place method first. Reach behind the headlight housing from the engine bay and find the round rubber dust cap on the inboard/low side of the lamp. Twist it counterclockwise or peel the rubber boot off.
Driver side: to gain room, unclip the air cleaner inlet duct and loosen the air box (Phillips screws on the lid clips, one or two 10 mm bracket bolts) and move it aside. Passenger side: move the windshield washer filler neck and coolant reservoir hose out of the way.
Squeeze the tab on the H11 connector and pull it straight off the bulb base. Do not pull on the wires.
Turn the H11 bulb roughly a quarter turn counterclockwise and withdraw it straight out of the housing.
If access is too tight to work by feel, remove the housing instead: pop the upper grille/radiator cover push clips, remove the two upper 10 mm bolts, the outboard 10 mm bolt near the fender, and the one behind the bumper edge or in the wheel-well liner, then ease the headlight forward and unplug the harness connectors.
Fit the new H11 bulb with gloves on, aligning the three locating tabs with the slots, push it fully in and turn clockwise until it stops. It should sit flush with no wobble.
Reconnect the connector until it clicks, add a light smear of dielectric grease if desired, and turn the low beams on to confirm operation before reassembly.
Reinstall the dust cap so its drain/vent tab points down and the rubber is fully seated all around - a poorly seated cap is the main cause of headlight condensation on this car.
Reinstall the air box, ducting, washer neck, clips, liner screws and any housing bolts you removed. Snug the housing bolts lightly, about 5-6 ft-lb.
Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in color and output, and check the beam cutoff on a wall at night - if you removed the housing, verify aim with the adjuster screw on top of the lamp.
Watch out
Never touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; oil residue creates a hot spot and the bulb fails within weeks.
Halogen bulbs run extremely hot - let the lamp cool for 10+ minutes before touching the bulb base.
The grille and headlight push-pin clips get brittle; use a nylon trim tool and expect to buy a few replacement clips.
S Premium trims with factory LED low beams have no replaceable bulb. Do not pry at the sealed projector - a new assembly is the only fix.
Aftermarket LED or HID 'conversion' bulbs in this halogen reflector/projector housing scatter light, are not DOT-compliant, and can trigger bulb-out or flicker issues on some model years.
If you disconnect the battery, the radio presets and idle relearn may reset; no bulb coding or registration is needed on this car.
H11 low beam and 9005/HB3 high beam are correct for halogen E170 Corollas and the fasteners you touch are 10 mm plus Phillips screws; double-check your own trim for factory LED low beams and confirm bulb type against the owner's manual or the old bulb's base marking.
Frequently asked
What bulb does a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla low beam use?
Halogen-equipped trims use an H11 12V 55W bulb for the low beam. The high beam is a 9005 (HB3) 65W. S Premium models with factory LED low beams have no replaceable bulb.
Do I have to remove the bumper or headlight to change the bulb?
No bumper removal is needed. Many people can reach the H11 socket by feel after moving the air intake duct (driver side) or washer filler neck (passenger side); if not, the headlight comes out with four 10 mm bolts and a couple of grille push clips.
Why does only my driver-side low beam keep burning out?
Usually a poorly seated rubber dust cap letting in moisture, touching the glass during installation, or a corroded connector. Check the cap seal and clean the terminals, and replace with a quality bulb rather than a high-wattage 'plus' bulb.
Can I put LED bulbs in the halogen Corolla headlights?
They physically fit the H11 socket but the reflector is designed for a halogen filament, so output scatters and glares oncoming traffic, and it is not DOT-legal for road use. If you want LED low beams, the correct route is the factory LED headlight assembly.
