Tools you need for water pump on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla

Moderate · 2-3 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 14 mm socket, 1/2 in drive (belt tensioner)
  3. 21 mm lug socket, 1/2 in drive
  4. Drain pan and funnel for coolant
  5. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive

On the E170 Corolla with the 1.8L 2ZR-FE or 2ZR-FAE, the water pump is one of the easier ones in the modern Toyota lineup. It is belt-driven and bolted to the front right of the block, so everything happens through the passenger wheel well: pull the wheel, pull the inner fender liner, release the automatic belt tensioner with a 14 mm socket, and the pump comes off with a handful of 10 mm bolts. No timing cover, no engine mount, no special pullers.

The two things people get wrong are the coolant and the air. Toyota SLLC pink is pre-mixed — adding distilled water on top of it lowers the freeze and boil protection, and mixing brands can turn it to sludge. Second, this system traps air easily; if you just dump coolant in and drive off, the gauge can climb even though the new pump is fine. Use a spill-free funnel, run the engine with the heater on high until the thermostat opens, and recheck the level after it cools.

Differences within the 2014-2019 generation

The entire E170 generation in North America uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FE or the Valvematic 2ZR-FAE, and the water pump mounting, 10 mm bolt heads and 14 mm tensioner are the same on both. Only belt length differs by option content (A/C, alternator size), so match the belt to your VIN rather than assuming. The Valvematic engine has extra hardware near the front of the head but it does not affect water pump access.

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Remove the engine appearance cover if fitted and open the radiator cap to help drainage.
  2. Loosen the passenger front lug nuts, raise the front right corner, set a jack stand, and remove the wheel.
  3. Place a drain pan under the radiator, open the plastic drain cock at the lower driver-side corner of the radiator by hand, and drain the coolant. Expect roughly 1.5 gallons from the radiator; the block retains some.
  4. Remove the passenger inner fender splash shield: 10 mm bolts plus several plastic push clips and one or two screws. Set the hardware aside in a tray.
  5. From the wheel well, note the serpentine belt routing (photograph it). Put a 14 mm socket on the automatic tensioner pulley bolt, rotate the tensioner to release tension, and slip the belt off the water pump pulley.
  6. Remove the four water pump pulley bolts (10 mm heads). If the pulley spins, hold it with a strap wrench or reinstall the belt for the initial loosening before releasing the tensioner.
  7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts (10 mm heads; note different lengths and their positions). Some coolant will run out — keep the pan under the car.
  8. Work the pump off the block. If it is stuck, tap it gently with a plastic mallet; do not pry against the aluminum sealing face.
  9. Scrape and clean the block sealing surface with a plastic scraper and brake cleaner. The surface must be dry and free of old gasket material.
  10. Fit the new gasket or O-ring dry (no sealant unless the pump instructions specify FIPG), set the pump in place, and start all bolts by hand before torquing them evenly in a crossing pattern.
  11. Reinstall the pulley and torque its bolts. Spin the pump by hand to confirm it turns freely with no wobble.
  12. Route the belt per your photo, release the tensioner with the 14 mm socket, seat the belt on all pulleys, and verify it sits centered in every groove.
  13. Reinstall the splash shield, wheel, and torque lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  14. Close the radiator drain cock hand tight. Fill with Toyota pink SLLC using a spill-free funnel, squeezing the upper radiator hose to help push out air.
  15. Start the engine with the funnel attached, run it with the heater on full hot until the thermostat opens and the level drops, top off, then cap the radiator and fill the overflow reservoir to the F line.
  16. Drive the car, let it cool fully, and recheck the coolant level and the pump area for leaks. Recheck again after a day or two.

Watch out

The 10 mm pump and pulley bolt heads, 14 mm tensioner, and 21 mm lug nuts are correct for the E170 1.8L; verify the exact pump and pulley bolt torque figures in a factory service manual before final tightening.

Frequently asked

Do I need to remove the timing cover to change the water pump on a 2014-2019 Corolla?

No. The 1.8L 2ZR water pump is driven by the external serpentine belt and bolts to the outside of the block. It comes off through the passenger wheel well with a 10 mm socket after you release the belt tensioner.

What size socket are the Corolla water pump bolts?

The water pump mounting bolts and the four pulley bolts use 10 mm heads on a 3/8 in drive. The automatic belt tensioner takes a 14 mm socket, and the lug nuts are 21 mm.

How much coolant does the job take?

Draining through the radiator cock gets roughly 1.5 gallons out; plan on about 2 gallons of Toyota SLLC pink pre-mix on hand so you can top off after burping. Do not dilute it with water.

How do I know the water pump is bad and not just a hose?

Look for pink crust or a wet trail at the pump weep hole and pulley area in the passenger wheel well, a coolant smell after driving, or a rumbling bearing noise that changes with engine speed. A wobbling or gritty-feeling pulley with the belt off confirms a failed bearing.
