Tools you need for water pump on a 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma

Moderate · 3-4 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 14 mm wrench for belt tensioner
  3. Socket set with 12 mm and 14 mm
  4. Drain pan and funnel kit
  5. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive

On the 2nd-gen Tacoma the water pump is a bolt-on part at the front of the timing cover, driven by the serpentine belt. There is no timing belt to deal with on either engine, so this is mostly a matter of draining coolant, getting the belt and fan out of the way, and unbolting a handful of 10 mm fasteners. The 4.0 V6 takes longer because the mechanical fan and clutch sit right in front of the pump and the bay is crowded; the 2.7 four-cylinder is a genuinely easy afternoon.

The one thing people get wrong is the refill. This cooling system traps air, and if you just dump coolant in and drive off, the truck will run hot and you will think the new pump failed. Use a spill-free funnel, run it to full operating temperature with the heater on high, and recheck cold the next morning. Second most common mistake: cranking the pump bolts down by feel and pulling threads out of the aluminum cover.

Recommendedshop
Hose clamp pliers
Spring-clamp or standard slip-joint pliers
Removes the spring clamps on the radiator and bypass hoses.
Recommendedshop
Screwdriver set
Flat blade and Phillips #2
Radiator petcock, shroud clips, and holding the fan pulley while loosening nuts.
Requiredshop
Fan pulley holding tool
Pulley holder or long pin punch through pulley holes
Keeps the water pump pulley from spinning while the 4 fan clutch nuts come off (1GR-FE).
Recommendedshop
Gasket scraper
Plastic or brass scraper
Cleans the old gasket off the aluminum timing cover without gouging it.
Requiredshop
Brake cleaner or parts cleaner
Aerosol
Degreases the sealing surface before fitting the new pump.
Consumablesshop
Shop towels
Lint-free
Wipe coolant out of the valley and off the belt.
Consumablesshop
Torque wrench
3/8 in drive, 5-80 ft-lb
Pump bolts thread into aluminum and strip easily if overtightened.
Requiredshop
Water pump
Aisin WPT-xxx or Toyota OE for 2TR-FE or 1GR-FE, with gasket/O-ring
The replacement pump; buy OE or Aisin, not the cheapest option.
Partsshop
Toyota coolant
SLLC pink (2010+) or red LLC 50/50 (2005-2009), 2 gallons
Refill; pink SLLC comes premixed and is back-compatible.
Consumablesshop
Distilled water
1 gallon
Flushes and tops off if you buy concentrate.
Consumablesshop
Funnel with spill-free adapter
Toyota/universal radiator neck funnel kit
Fills and burps the system without air pockets, which this engine is picky about.
Recommendedshop
Thermostat and gasket
OE thermostat with rubber ring
Cheap to do while the coolant is out; it sits in the lower housing.
Partsshop
Safety glasses and nitrile gloves

Hot coolant and sharp fan blades.

Differences within the 2005-2015 generation

Both engines use mostly 10 mm head bolts on the pump and pulley and a 14 mm tensioner. The 4.0 1GR-FE adds four 10 mm nuts for the fan clutch on the pump pulley and a larger plastic shroud, so a pulley holding tool is worth having; the 2.7 2TR-FE pump is smaller with fewer bolts and no clutch nuts to fight. Coolant capacity is roughly 7-8 quarts on the 2.7 and 9-10 quarts on the 4.0.

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely, then remove the radiator cap and the engine cover/air intake pieces in the way.
  2. Raise the front of the truck on jack stands and place a wide drain pan under the radiator.
  3. Open the plastic radiator drain cock (hand or flat screwdriver) and drain the coolant; optionally pull the block drain plug for a full drain.
  4. Release the serpentine belt tensioner with a 14 mm wrench or belt tool and slip the belt off; note the routing or photograph it first.
  5. Remove the upper radiator hose and any coolant hoses crossing the fan area (spring clamps, pliers).
  6. Unbolt the plastic fan shroud (10 mm bolts and clips) and lift it out.
  7. On the 4.0 V6: hold the water pump pulley with a holder or pin punch and remove the four 10 mm nuts holding the fan and clutch, then lift the fan and clutch out with the shroud.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley bolts (10 mm) and take the pulley off.
  9. Remove the water pump bolts (mostly 10 mm heads, a couple 12 mm on some brackets) and note their different lengths and locations.
  10. Pull the pump free; if the gasket is stuck, work it loose gently without prying on the aluminum cover.
  11. Scrape and clean the timing cover sealing surface, then wipe it with parts cleaner.
  12. Fit the new gasket or O-ring dry (unless the pump instructions call for sealant), set the pump in place and hand-start every bolt before tightening.
  13. Torque the pump bolts evenly in a crossing pattern to spec; do not exceed it, the threads are in aluminum.
  14. Reinstall the pulley, fan and clutch, shroud, hoses and serpentine belt; confirm the belt sits in every groove.
  15. Fit the spill-free funnel and fill slowly with the correct Toyota coolant; squeeze the upper hose to help push air out.
  16. Start the engine with the funnel attached, run the heater on high, and let it reach full temperature until the thermostat opens and the level stops dropping.
  17. Cap it, run it up to temperature again, then recheck the level in the radiator and reservoir cold the next day and inspect for leaks.

Watch out

Bolt head sizes (10 mm mostly, with 12 mm and 14 mm on shroud/tensioner/brackets) are reliable for both 2TR-FE and 1GR-FE, but torque figures for the pump and fan hardware should be confirmed against the Toyota service manual for your exact year.

Frequently asked

Do I have to remove the radiator to replace the water pump on a Tacoma?

No. On both the 2.7 and the 4.0 the pump comes out with the radiator in place once the belt, fan/shroud and pulley are removed. Some people pull the shroud and fan as one assembly to save time.

How much coolant does it take?

Plan on about 2 gallons of premixed Toyota coolant: roughly 7-8 quarts for the 2.7 and 9-10 quarts for the 4.0, less if you only drain the radiator and not the block.

Can I use green or universal coolant?

Stick with Toyota SLLC pink (or the older red LLC mixed 50/50). Universal coolants can gel or attack the aluminum and gaskets, and mixing types is a common cause of premature pump seal failure.

What are the symptoms of a failing Tacoma water pump?

Pink or red crust and drips below the pump weep hole, a whirring or grinding from the front of the engine, coolant smell after a drive, or play felt in the pulley when you rock it by hand. Check the idler and tensioner pulleys too, since they make a very similar noise.
