This is the easiest maintenance item on a 2nd gen Tacoma. The air box lives on the driver's side inner fender, the lid is held by spring clips and usually a screw or two at the front, and the whole job takes about ten minutes with a screwdriver. Both the 2.7L 2TR-FE four-cylinder and the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 use the same panel filter, Toyota 17801-0C010, so you do not have to know which engine you have to buy the right part.
The thing people get wrong is skipping the cleanout. These trucks pull intake air from near the fender and the lower housing fills with leaves, pine needles and sand; if you drop the new filter on top of that, it gets dirty fast and debris can migrate past the seal. Vacuum the box, wipe the sealing lip, and make sure every clip is re-latched so the lid does not whistle or let dust bypass the filter.

No tool difference between the 2.7L 2TR-FE and the 4.0L 1GR-FE: both use the same air box layout and the same filter, Toyota 17801-0C010. The only variation across the generation is whether the lid uses a Phillips screw or a 10 mm hex-head screw, and how many spring clips are fitted.

The filter part number and the clip-plus-screw lid design are reliable for the 2005-2015 2nd gen Tacoma, but the exact number of clips and whether your lid screw is Phillips or 10 mm hex varies slightly by year, so check before buying anything.
Toyota part 17801-0C010 fits both the 2.7L four-cylinder and the 4.0L V6 across the entire 2nd generation. Common aftermarket equivalents are Denso 143-3060, Fram CA10169 and Wix 49138.
Usually just a #2 Phillips screwdriver for the lid screw and your fingers or a small flat screwdriver for the spring clips. Some trucks have a 10 mm hex-head screw instead, so keep a 10 mm socket handy.
Toyota lists roughly every 30,000 miles under normal driving. If you run dirt roads, dusty job sites or tow in summer, inspect it every oil change and replace it around 15,000-20,000 miles.
An oiled filter works, but over-oiling is a common cause of a contaminated MAF sensor, rough idle and lean codes like P0171. If you use one, oil it sparingly and let it dry before installing.
