On the 2nd-gen Tacoma this is about as friendly as an oil change gets. Both engines use a 14 mm hex-head drain plug in an aluminum pan and a traditional spin-on filter you reach from underneath, so there is no cartridge housing to fight and no plastic engine cover to pull. Budget 30-45 minutes the first time, less after that.
The main difference is filter location: the 2.7L 2TR-FE filter sits at the front of the block where oil drops more or less straight into your pan, while the 4.0L 1GR-FE filter is tucked on the passenger side and dumps oil across the frame and crossmember unless you catch it. 4x4 and TRD trucks add a front skid plate held by a handful of 12 mm or 14 mm bolts. The thing people get wrong is torque: they lean on the 14 mm drain plug or run the filter on with a wrench, and then they are dealing with stripped aluminum threads or a filter nobody can remove next time. 27 ft-lb on the plug, new crush washer every time, filter hand tight only.

The 2.7L 2TR-FE holds about 5.5 quarts with a filter change and the 4.0L 1GR-FE about 6.1 quarts. Fill a half quart short, run the engine, then top to the upper dipstick mark.
A 14 mm socket fits the hex-head drain plug on both the 2.7L and 4.0L. Torque it to 27 ft-lb (37 Nm) with a new 18 mm crush washer, part 90430-18008.
A 14-flute cap wrench: 64.5 mm for the 4.0L V6 filter and 65 mm for the 2.7L. A 3-jaw or strap wrench works as a backup if the previous filter was overtightened.
