Tools you need for transmission fluid on a 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma

Moderate · 1-2 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 24 mm socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. 5 mm hex bit socket (WS overflow plug)
  3. Fluid transfer pump or funnel with hose
  4. Scan tool reading ATF temperature (4.0 WS)
  5. Drain pan, 8 qt minimum

Which job you are doing depends on which engine you have. The 2.7L 2TR-FE trucks got the A340E/F four-speed, which still has a dipstick and uses Toyota Type T-IV, so it is about as easy as an oil change. The 4.0L 1GR-FE trucks got the A750E/F five-speed, a Toyota WS "sealed" unit with no dipstick, a side fill plug, and a plastic overflow tube inside the drain hole. On that one the correct level is set by letting fluid overflow at a specific fluid temperature, so you need a scan tool that shows ATF temperature.

The mistake people make is treating the WS transmission like a dipstick transmission and pouring in "about three quarts" before calling it done. The other common error is doing the level check with the truck jacked up on one end or on a sloped driveway. Both give you a level that is off by a quart or more, and on these units that shows up as harsh or flaring shifts. Also remember a drain and fill only exchanges about a third of the fluid, so if it is dark, plan on two or three passes rather than one flush.

Differences within the 2005-2015 generation

2.7L 2TR-FE (A340E/A340F four-speed): Type T-IV fluid, dipstick on the passenger side, single 24 mm pan drain plug, no overflow tube and no temperature check needed. 4.0L 1GR-FE (A750E/A750F five-speed): Toyota WS fluid, no dipstick, 24 mm pan drain plug with a 5 mm hex overflow tube plug inside it, plus a 24 mm side fill plug and a required 95-115 F overflow level check.

Torque specs

Transmission pan drain plug (A750E/F and A340E/F)verify in the service manual (typically around 15-20 ft-lb into aluminum)
Overflow tube plug, A750E/Fverify in the service manual
Side fill / refill plug, A750E/Fverify in the service manual
Pan bolts (only if dropping the pan)verify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Identify your transmission: 2.7L trucks use the A340E (2WD) or A340F (4WD) four-speed with a dipstick and Type T-IV fluid; 4.0L trucks use the A750E/F five-speed with no dipstick and Toyota WS fluid.
  2. Drive the truck 10-15 minutes to warm the fluid, then park on level ground. Level matters more than anything else on the WS transmission.
  3. Chock the wheels, lift the truck and support it on jack stands under the frame so it sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side. Lifting only one end will give a false fill level.
  4. Position the drain pan. On the A750, remove the 24 mm drain plug from the transmission pan; a plastic overflow tube sits inside that hole. Let all the fluid drain out.
  5. With the fluid drained, use a 5 mm hex bit to remove the inner overflow tube plug and let the rest of the pan contents drain. Skip this step on the 2.7L four-speed, which has no overflow tube.
  6. Measure what you drained. Expect roughly 2.5-3.5 quarts on a drain and fill.
  7. Reinstall the overflow plug with a new gasket and torque to spec, then reinstall the drain plug with a new gasket and torque to spec.
  8. Locate the fill plug on the side or upper rear of the transmission case (24 mm). Remove it and pump in the same amount of fresh fluid you drained, plus a little extra on the WS unit so it will overflow.
  9. On the 2.7L: refill through the dipstick tube, start the engine, cycle the shifter through all gears, then check the dipstick at operating temperature on the HOT mark and top off.
  10. On the 4.0L WS unit: with the fill plug loosely in place, start the engine and let it idle in Park. Cycle the shifter through all ranges and return to Park.
  11. Watch ATF temperature on the scan tool. When it reaches 95-115 F (35-45 C), remove the overflow tube plug with the engine still idling.
  12. If fluid runs out in a steady stream, wait until it slows to a thin drip, then install the overflow plug with a new gasket and torque to spec. If nothing comes out, add more fluid through the fill plug until it does, then recheck.
  13. Install and torque the fill plug with a new gasket, shut the engine off, lower the truck and check underneath for leaks after a short test drive.
  14. Repeat the drain and fill in 1,000-3,000 miles if the old fluid was dark, to exchange more of the total capacity.

Watch out

Plug sizes on both transmissions are commonly 24 mm with a 5 mm hex inner overflow plug on the WS unit, and fluid types are correct by engine, but plug size and torque can vary slightly by year, so confirm against the factory repair manual for your exact model year.

Frequently asked

Does the 2005-2015 Tacoma have a transmission dipstick?

The 2.7L four-cylinder with the A340E/F four-speed has one on the passenger side of the engine bay. The 4.0L V6 with the A750E/F five-speed does not; you set the level through the overflow tube plug in the pan at 95-115 F.

How much fluid does a drain and fill take?

Plan on 2.5-3.5 quarts coming out, and buy 4-5 quarts so you have extra to overfill the WS unit before the overflow check. Total transmission capacity is roughly 9-11 quarts, so one drain and fill exchanges about a third.

Can I use a universal ATF instead of Toyota WS?

No. The A750E/F is designed around WS fluid, and the A340E/F around Type T-IV. Using the wrong fluid or a "multi-vehicle" ATF commonly causes shudder and harsh shifts. Aftermarket fluids labeled as meeting WS spec exist, but stick to a reputable brand.

Do I need a scan tool for this job?

On the 4.0L yes, in practice. The WS level check is only valid between 95 and 115 F fluid temperature, and there is no dipstick to fall back on. A cheap Bluetooth OBD-II dongle with a Toyota-capable app that shows the ATF temperature PID is enough; an infrared thermometer on the pan is a rough backup.
