This is the easiest maintenance job on a second-gen Tacoma. The filter lives in the HVAC case behind the glove box, and you get to it by unclipping the glove box damper arm and squeezing the box past its side stops so it drops all the way down. No sockets, no dash trim, no drilling - the only real tools are a light and a small screwdriver to pop the damper ball socket.
Two things trip people up. First, plenty of 2005-2008 trucks and later base/work-truck models left the factory with an empty slot or a plain plastic blank instead of a filter, so if you pull the cover and find nothing, the truck is fine and you just install a filter. Second, the airflow arrow points down on this housing - install it arrow-up and you cut your blower output and can pop the cover loose. Both the 2.7 2TR-FE and 4.0 1GR-FE use the identical housing and filter.
