On the XV50 Camry (2012-2017, including the Hybrid) the cabin air filter is one of the easiest maintenance items on the car. It lives in the HVAC case right behind the glovebox, and Toyota designed it so the glovebox drops down out of the way once you unhook the damper arm - no screws, no sockets, no dash disassembly. Budget ten minutes the first time and five after that.
Nothing changes between the 2.5 four-cylinder, the 3.5 V6 and the Hybrid; they all use the same 87139-06040 element. The two things people get wrong are yanking the glovebox down before releasing the damper arm (which snaps the plastic ball socket) and installing the filter with the airflow arrow pointing up. The arrow faces down on this car. Also vacuum the empty cavity - leaves collect there and go straight into your new filter otherwise.

How the job goes
Turn the ignition off and empty the glovebox completely.
Open the glovebox fully. On the right side of the box you will see the cylindrical damper (a small shock) with an arm ending in a ball socket. Pop that socket off its pin with a small flat screwdriver or trim tool, or unclip the arm from the glovebox side.
Squeeze both sides of the glovebox inward so the side stops clear the dash opening, then swing the box down past its normal stop. On most XV50 cars the glovebox can simply hang down; you do not have to remove it.
Behind the glovebox you will see a rectangular filter cover with a tab on each side. Pinch the side tabs and pull the cover straight out toward you.
Slide the old filter out horizontally. Note the AIR FLOW arrow printed on its edge; on this car it points down. Expect a shower of debris, so hold a rag or bag under it.
Vacuum the filter cavity and the floor area. If you are treating a musty smell, spray HVAC cleaner into the housing now and follow the can directions.
Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing down and the frame flat, not cocked. It should slide in with light pressure; if it binds, it is upside down or out of its guides.
Reinstall the filter cover, making sure both side tabs click.
Lift the glovebox back up, squeeze the sides in to clear the dash stops, and seat it in the opening. Reattach the damper arm to its ball pin until it snaps.
Check the glovebox opens and closes smoothly on the damper, then run the blower on high to confirm normal airflow with no new rattles or whistling.
Write the date and mileage on the edge of the filter frame next time for easy tracking; replace every 15,000-30,000 miles or yearly.
Watch out
Do not force the glovebox down without releasing the damper arm first - the plastic ball socket and the glovebox side stops break easily.
Install the filter with the airflow arrow pointing down. Backwards installation reduces airflow and can shorten filter life.
If the old filter is full of nesting material or seeds, inspect the blower housing for rodent damage before closing up.
Don't substitute a thicker filter or double up filters; the cover will not latch and unfiltered air will bypass the element.
Hybrid models have the same cabin filter location, but keep hands clear of the traction battery cooling intake vent in the rear seat area - that is a separate filter/screen and is not this job.
This is a tool-free, clip-release job across all 2012-2017 XV50 Camry trims and engines; the only variation is whether your car has a screwed damper bracket, so check behind the right side of the glovebox before prying.
