Tools you need for transmission fluid on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150

Moderate · 2-3 hours (3-4 if dropping the pan and filter) · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 3/8 in drive ratchet and extensions
  2. 8 mm hex key/socket for fill plug
  3. Fluid transfer pump with long hose
  4. Scan tool reading trans fluid temp
  5. Torque wrench, in-lb and ft-lb

The 13th-gen F-150 has no transmission dipstick, so this job is less about draining and more about refilling correctly. You drain at the pan, pump new fluid in through a plug on the side of the case, then set the level by letting excess dribble out while the engine idles and the fluid sits in a specific temperature window that you read with a scan tool. The truck has to be dead level for that check to mean anything.

The big fork in the road is which transmission you have. 2015-2017 trucks and the 2018-2020 3.3L V6 use the 6R80 six-speed with Mercon LV. 2017 3.5 EcoBoost trucks and essentially all 2018-2020 2.7/3.5/5.0 trucks use the 10R80 ten-speed, which requires the thinner Mercon ULV. The mistake people make most often is grabbing the wrong one of those two fluids, or skipping the temperature-based level check and just dumping in what came out - both lead to shift complaints that get blamed on the transmission.

Differences within the 2015-2020 generation

Socket sizes are the same across engines; what changes is the transmission behind them. 6R80 (2015-2017 all engines, 2018-2020 3.3L V6) takes Mercon LV, about 6 qt on a pan drop; 10R80 (2017 3.5 EcoBoost/Raptor, 2018-2020 2.7/3.5/5.0) takes Mercon ULV, about 7 qt. Pan bolts on both are 8 mm hex head; the drain and fill plugs are an internal hex, commonly 8 mm or 5/16 in, so test-fit both.

How the job goes

  1. Identify your transmission: 6R80 six-speed on 2015-2017 trucks and 2018-2020 3.3L V6; 10R80 ten-speed on 2017-2020 3.5 EcoBoost (including Raptor) and all 2018-2020 2.7/3.5/5.0. Buy Mercon LV for 6R80, Mercon ULV for 10R80.
  2. Drive the truck 10-15 minutes to warm and suspend the fluid, then park on level ground. Note: you will drain it warm, not scalding.
  3. Raise all four corners on jack stands so the truck sits level, or use a level lift. An out-of-level truck gives a false fluid level.
  4. Position the drain pan. If your transmission has a pan drain plug, remove it with the correct hex key and drain. If not, loosen the 8 mm pan bolts, leave a few at one corner, and let the pan tip to drain before removing it fully.
  5. If the pan is off, remove the filter, clean the magnets and pan, inspect debris (fine gray paste is normal, chunks or clutch material is not), fit the new filter and gasket, and reinstall the pan. Start all bolts by hand and torque evenly in a criss-cross pattern to spec - the case is aluminum.
  6. Reinstall the drain plug to spec if you used one.
  7. Find the fill/level plug on the side of the transmission case/pan and remove it with the correct hex key or 3/8 in drive. Have a rag ready.
  8. Pump in the same amount you drained (roughly 5-6 qt on a 6R80 pan drop, 6-7 qt on a 10R80), until fluid just starts to weep back out of the hole.
  9. Reinstall the plug loosely, lower the truck if needed to run it, connect the scan tool and monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  10. With the engine idling and the parking brake set, shift slowly through P-R-N-D and back, holding a few seconds in each range, then return to Park to fill the circuits.
  11. Bring the fluid into the manufacturer's check window (roughly 190-200 F on the 6R80; use the temperature range your service information gives for the 10R80) and, with the engine idling, remove the fill plug. A steady dribble that slows to a drip means the level is correct. If nothing comes out, pump in more fluid a half quart at a time and recheck.
  12. Install the fill plug to spec, shut the engine off, and wipe the case clean so you can spot a leak.
  13. Test drive, then recheck for leaks at the pan and plug once cool. Dispose of the old fluid at a recycling center.

Watch out

Transmission identification, fluid types and capacities are solid; the exact hex size of the drain and fill plugs varies between 6R80 and 10R80 and even by build date (commonly 8 mm or 5/16 in), so test-fit before you drain, and confirm the pan bolt and plug torque values and the fluid-temperature check window in Ford service information for your year.

Frequently asked

Does the 2015-2020 F-150 have a transmission dipstick?

No. Both the 6R80 and 10R80 are sealed with no dipstick or fill tube. The level is set by pumping fluid into a plug on the side of the case and letting the excess run out at a specified fluid temperature with the engine idling.

How much fluid does a drain and fill take?

Roughly 5-6 quarts on a 6R80 pan drop and 6-7 quarts on a 10R80. Total system capacity is about 13 quarts for both, so one service replaces less than half the fluid - buy two extra quarts for topping off.

Mercon LV or Mercon ULV for my F-150?

6R80 six-speed (2015-2017 trucks, plus 2018-2020 3.3L V6) uses Mercon LV. 10R80 ten-speed (2017 3.5 EcoBoost, all 2018-2020 2.7/3.5/5.0) uses Mercon ULV. They are not interchangeable; check the tag on the transmission if you are unsure.

How often should the transmission fluid be changed?

Ford lists it as a severe-duty item, often around 150,000 miles for normal use, but most techs recommend every 50,000-60,000 miles, and sooner if you tow. A drain and fill at that interval is cheap insurance on a 10R80.
