Of all the maintenance jobs on a 14th-gen F-150, this is the easiest. The airbox sits high on the passenger side, the lid is held by spring clips and one or two 8 mm hex-head screws, and the filter is a flat panel you lift straight out. Most people finish in under 15 minutes with a single socket and a screwdriver.
The mistake to avoid is not the removal, it is the reassembly. If the rubber sealing lip of the new filter is not fully in its groove, or one spring clip is not fully snapped home, you get unmetered air past the MAF and can end up chasing lean codes and a rough idle. Seat the filter flat, check all four corners, then close the lid and listen at idle for any whistle.

| Flat-tip pick or 7 mm/8 mm driver For worm-gear hose clamp Loosens the intake tube clamp if the lid will not clear on tight builds. | Recommended | shop |
| Shop vacuum Narrow crevice nozzle Cleans leaves and dirt out of the lower airbox before fitting the new filter. | Recommended | shop |

| Engine air filter Ford FA-1927 / Motorcraft panel filter (2.7L/3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L, 3.5L PowerBoost) The replacement element; same panel filter across the gas and hybrid engines. | Parts | shop |
| MAF sensor cleaner Aerosol, MAF-safe only Optional cleanup of the mass air flow sensor while the box is open. | Consumables | shop |
Tool sizes are the same across 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 and 3.5L PowerBoost — 8 mm lid screws and the same panel element. The PowerBoost's box sits tighter to the cowl, so a short 1/4 in ratchet or an 8 mm nut driver helps, and on some 5.0L builds you may find only spring clips with no screw at all.
| Airbox lid hex-head screws (8 mm) | Snug by hand, approx. 18-25 in-lb — verify in the service manual |
| Intake tube worm-gear clamp | verify in the service manual (snug only, plastic housing) |
The 8 mm hex-head lid screws and spring-clip design are consistent across 14th-gen F-150 airboxes, but clip count and screw count vary slightly by engine and build date, so check your own lid before prying.
An 8 mm socket on a 1/4 in drive ratchet, or an 8 mm nut driver, handles the airbox lid screws. Everything else is spring clips you pop by hand or with a flat screwdriver.
The Motorcraft FA-1927 panel filter covers the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 and 3.5L PowerBoost in this generation. Aftermarket equivalents from Fram, Wix and K&N cross-reference to the same part.
Ford's schedule is roughly every 30,000 miles under normal use. If you run gravel roads, tow in dust or work on job sites, inspect it every oil change and replace when the pleats are grey and packed.
A merely dirty filter usually just costs a little power and economy. A missing, torn or badly seated filter, or a lid that is not clipped shut, can cause unmetered air and set lean codes like P0171 or P0174.
