Tools you need for water pump on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Moderate · 3-4 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 15 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 13 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 36 mm fan clutch wrench
  4. Serpentine belt tensioner tool / long breaker bar
  5. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive

On the K2XX Silverado 1500 the water pump itself is easy \u2014 it is a handful of M8 bolts into the front cover with a reusable-style gasket. The time goes into access: draining 12-14 quarts of Dex-Cool, pulling the fan shroud and engine-driven fan clutch, and getting the serpentine belt off with a long tensioner tool. All three Gen V engines (4.3 LV3, 5.3 L83, 6.2 L86) use the same basic pump layout, so the procedure barely changes between them.

The two things people get wrong are torque and air. These bolts thread into aluminum and only want about 22 ft-lb; run them down with an impact and you will be chasing stripped threads. And if you just dump coolant in and drive off, the system traps air, the gauge swings, and you get a false overheat \u2014 use a spill-free funnel, run it up to temp with the heater on high, and let it burp properly. While you are in there, a new thermostat is a few dollars and saves a repeat teardown.

Differences within the 2014-2018 generation

Tool sizes are essentially identical across the 4.3, 5.3 and 6.2 in this generation: 13 mm M8 pump bolts, 15 mm belt tensioner, 8/10 mm shroud hardware. The 4.3 V6 has a shorter front accessory layout so belt routing differs and there is slightly more room at the pump. Belt length and the specific pump part number differ by engine, and 6.2 trucks with heavy-duty cooling may have extra shroud/hose brackets to unbolt.

Torque specs

Water pump to front cover bolts (M8)22 ft-lb (30 Nm)
Thermostat housing / coolant inlet bolts18 ft-lb (25 Nm) - verify in the service manual
Water pump pulley bolts (if bolt-on)verify in the service manual
Fan clutch nut to pump hubverify in the service manual
Belt tensioner bolt37 ft-lb (50 Nm) - verify in the service manual
Fan shroud boltsHand tight, about 7 ft-lb (10 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will be near the fan or electrical connectors.
  2. Raise the front of the truck, support it on jack stands, and remove the lower air deflector/splash shield if fitted (10 mm bolts and Torx/plastic screws).
  3. Place a large drain pan under the radiator. Open the radiator drain (driver side lower tank) or release the lower radiator hose clamp and pull the hose to drain roughly 12-14 quarts of Dex-Cool. Remove the radiator cap/surge tank cap to speed draining.
  4. Remove the upper fan shroud/air inlet duct and the shroud fasteners (8 mm and 10 mm), then unclip any wiring and the coolant hose retainers from the shroud.
  5. Rotate the belt tensioner with a long-handle serpentine tool or breaker bar and 15 mm socket, slip the accessory belt off, and let the tensioner return slowly. Note the belt routing or photograph it.
  6. Hold the water pump pulley with a holding tool or strap wrench and break loose the mechanical fan clutch. Depending on build it is a large nut (36 mm) on the pump hub or four 13 mm bolts through the pulley. Lift the fan and clutch out with the shroud.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley if it is bolt-on. If your original pulley is press-fit, install a new pump that comes with the pulley already fitted.
  8. Release the spring clamps and pull the upper radiator hose, heater hose and bypass/inlet hose from the pump and thermostat housing. Expect residual coolant.
  9. Unbolt the coolant inlet/thermostat housing from the pump if the new pump does not include it, and set the old thermostat aside.
  10. Remove the water pump bolts (13 mm heads on M8 bolts, some longer bolts/studs take 15 mm). Support the pump as the last bolt comes out and lift it off the front cover.
  11. Scrape and clean the front cover sealing surface with a plastic scraper and brake cleaner. Do not use a steel blade or wire wheel on the aluminum.
  12. Fit the new gasket or O-ring dry, set the pump in place, and start all bolts by hand. Snug them in a criss-cross pattern, then torque to 22 ft-lb (30 Nm).
  13. Install the new thermostat and housing, reconnect all hoses with the clamps fully seated behind the hose beads.
  14. Reinstall the pulley, fan clutch and shroud, then route the belt exactly as before and release the tensioner onto it. Verify the belt is centered on every pulley.
  15. Close the radiator drain, reconnect the lower hose, and fill through a spill-free funnel with 50/50 Dex-Cool until the funnel holds level.
  16. Start the engine with the funnel in place, run the heater on high, and let it reach operating temperature so the thermostat opens and air purges. Add coolant as the level drops.
  17. Shut off, let it cool, remove the funnel, and set the surge tank to the cold fill mark. Reinstall the deflector, lower the truck, and check for leaks after a short drive and again the next morning.

Watch out

Bolt sizes here (13 mm M8 pump bolts, 15 mm tensioner, 8/10 mm shroud) and the 22 ft-lb pump torque apply to all Gen V EcoTec3 engines in this generation, but fan clutch retention (large nut versus four bolts) and the pulley bolt torque vary by build date, so check your truck before ordering a 36 mm wrench and verify the fan clutch and pulley torques in a GM service manual.

Frequently asked

How much coolant does a 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 take?

Roughly 12-14 quarts (about 3 to 3.5 gallons) of Dex-Cool 50/50 depending on engine and cooling package. Buy four gallons of premix so you have enough to fill, burp and top off over the next few days.

What torque do the water pump bolts take on the 5.3 L83?

22 ft-lb (30 Nm) for the M8 pump-to-front-cover bolts, tightened evenly in a criss-cross pattern. They thread into aluminum, so use a torque wrench rather than an impact gun.

Do I have to remove the radiator or fan clutch?

The radiator can stay in. You do need to remove the fan shroud and the engine-driven fan clutch to get the pulley and pump out, which means either a 36 mm fan clutch wrench or removing four bolts through the pulley depending on your build.

Should I replace the thermostat at the same time?

Yes. The thermostat housing mounts at the pump/coolant inlet and it is already coming loose, so a new thermostat and gasket is cheap insurance against a second coolant drain a year later.
