Tools you need for water pump on a 2009-2018 Ram 1500

Moderate · 2-4 hours (5-7 on EcoDiesel) · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. Fan clutch wrench, 36 mm
  2. 13 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. Serpentine belt tensioner tool, 1/2 in drive
  4. Coolant drain pan and funnel kit
  5. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive

On the DS-generation Ram 1500, the water pump is a front-of-engine, belt-driven unit. On the 4.7 and the 5.7 Hemi the real work is getting the mechanical fan and clutch out of the way - a 36 mm thin fan wrench with a pulley holder is the tool that makes or breaks this job. Once the fan and belt are off, the pump itself is just a handful of 13 mm bolts and a gasket.

The 3.6 Pentastar trucks (2013+) skip the mechanical fan entirely, so those are the easiest. The 3.0 EcoDiesel is the outlier: the pump is buried behind charge-air and coolant plumbing and is a genuinely long afternoon. The thing people get wrong is coolant: 2009-2012 trucks use orange HOAT, 2013-on use purple OAT, and mixing them turns the coolant to sludge. Second most common mistake is not burping the air out, which cooks the engine a week later.

Differences within the 2009-2018 generation

4.7 and 5.7 (2009-2012, and 5.7 through 2018 in some configs) have a mechanical fan clutch needing a 36 mm thin fan wrench and holding tool; the 3.6 Pentastar and later electric-fan 5.7 trucks do not. Gas V8 pump and pulley bolts are generally 13 mm; the 3.6 Pentastar commonly uses 10 mm and Torx-head fasteners depending on pump supplier, and the 3.0 EcoDiesel adds hex/Torx fasteners plus removal of charge-air piping. Coolant differs too: orange HOAT MS-9769 for 2009-2012, purple OAT MS-12106 for 2013-2018 and all EcoDiesels.

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine cover or air intake tube for access.
  2. Place a large pan under the radiator, open the radiator drain (petcock at the lower driver side) and remove the pressure cap to let it flow. Drain 2+ gallons.
  3. On 4.7/5.7 trucks with a mechanical fan: unclip the upper fan shroud, then hold the water pump pulley and unthread the fan clutch hub nut with the 36 mm thin wrench. Confirm thread direction before force - many Chrysler clutches loosen counterclockwise but some are left-hand. Lift the fan and shroud out together.
  4. Relieve the serpentine belt with a 1/2 in breaker bar on the tensioner and slip the belt off. Note or photograph the routing.
  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts (usually 13 mm) if the pulley is separate from the pump hub.
  6. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose and any bypass hose at the pump using spring clamp pliers.
  7. Remove the water pump bolts, noting different lengths and positions. Rock the pump loose - do not pry against the aluminum timing cover sealing face.
  8. Scrape and clean the sealing surface with a plastic scraper, then wipe with brake cleaner. Blow out bolt holes.
  9. Fit the new pump with its supplied gasket or O-ring. Start all bolts by hand, then torque in a criss-cross pattern to spec.
  10. Reinstall the pulley, hoses, belt, fan clutch and shroud. Confirm the belt is seated in every groove.
  11. Close the drain, fill slowly with the correct 50/50 coolant using a spill-free funnel, and squeeze the upper hose to help purge air.
  12. Start the engine with the funnel attached, run to operating temperature with the heater on high, and top off until the thermostat opens and the level stabilizes.
  13. Shut down, let it cool, remove the funnel, cap it, and recheck level and for leaks after a full heat cycle and again the next day.

Watch out

Bolt sizes (13 mm typical for gas V8 pump and pulley, 36 mm fan hub nut) are accurate for the mainstream 4.7/5.7 trucks, but bolt head types vary by pump supplier on the 3.6 and 3.0 - dry-fit your sockets and confirm torque values in a FSM or AllData before final tightening.

Frequently asked

What size is the fan clutch nut on a 5.7 Hemi Ram 1500?

It is a 36 mm hub nut and you need a thin fan-clutch wrench plus a tool to hold the water pump pulley still. Check thread direction before you hammer on it - applying force the wrong way can snap the pump hub.

Do I have to remove the radiator to change the water pump?

No. On the 4.7 and 5.7 you only need the fan, shroud and belt out; on the 3.6 just the belt and some accessory brackets. The radiator stays in place on all gas engines.

What coolant does my Ram 1500 take?

2009-2012 trucks use Mopar orange HOAT (MS-9769); 2013-2018 trucks, including the EcoDiesel, use Mopar purple OAT (MS-12106). Do not mix them - if you are unsure what is in there, flush and refill with one type.

How do I know the water pump is bad and not the thermostat?

Look for coolant weeping from the pump's weep hole, a wobbling or noisy pulley when you rock it by hand, or a whine that changes with rpm. A stuck thermostat causes overheating with no leak and no bearing noise - many people replace both while the coolant is out.
