Tools you need for front brakes on a 2009-2018 Ram 1500

Moderate · 1.5-2.5 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 21 mm socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. 22 mm lug nut socket, 1/2 in drive
  3. 8 mm hex bit socket, 3/8 in drive
  4. Large C-clamp or caliper piston tool
  5. Torque wrench, 1/2 in drive, 20-150 ft-lb

Front brakes on the 4th-gen Ram 1500 are one of the easier jobs on the truck. Every engine, from the 3.6 Pentastar to the 5.7 Hemi and the 3.0 EcoDiesel, uses the same basic single-piston sliding caliper on a bolt-on bracket, so the tool list does not change with the engine. Two hex-head guide-pin bolts release the caliper and two big 21 mm bolts release the bracket, and the rotor then slides straight off the hub with no retaining screw.

The two things people get wrong: skipping the hub face cleanup, which leaves rust scale under the new rotor and causes runout and a pulsing pedal within a few thousand miles, and forgetting that the reservoir can overflow when you push the piston back. Also treat the 130 ft-lb bracket bolts with respect; they are frequently seized in the knuckle and stripping the head of one turns a two-hour job into a bad afternoon.

Differences within the 2009-2018 generation

Tool sizes are the same for the 4.7 V8, 3.6 Pentastar, 5.7 Hemi and 3.0 EcoDiesel. What changes is part sizing: 2009-2011 trucks generally use a roughly 330 mm (13.0 in) front rotor and 2012-2018 trucks a roughly 336 mm (13.2 in) rotor, and heavy-duty/police or 2500-style packages differ again, so measure your old rotor. A few trucks use a 13 mm hex-head guide-pin bolt instead of an 8 mm internal hex.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and loosen the front lug nuts a quarter turn with the truck still down.
  2. Raise the front of the truck at the frame rail or front crossmember and set jack stands under the frame. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and check the level; if it is at or near full, draw some out so it does not overflow when you retract the piston.
  4. Spray penetrating oil on the rotor-to-hub joint and on the two caliper bracket bolt heads. Let it soak.
  5. Place a C-clamp against the outer pad and the caliper body and squeeze the piston back into its bore about halfway so the caliper lifts off easily.
  6. Remove the two caliper guide-pin bolts (8 mm hex on most; check for 7 mm hex or 13 mm hex-head). If a pin spins, hold the pin flats with an open-end wrench.
  7. Lift the caliper off and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee cord. Never let it dangle on the flex hose.
  8. Slide the old pads out of the bracket and note where the abutment clips sit.
  9. Remove the two 21 mm bracket-to-knuckle bolts with a breaker bar and lift the bracket off.
  10. Pull the rotor straight off. If it is rusted on, hit the rotor hat between the studs with a dead blow, or thread two bolts into the rotor's threaded holes if present and tighten evenly.
  11. Wire-brush the hub face and hub pilot down to clean metal, then wipe with brake cleaner and apply a very thin coat of anti-seize to the hub face only.
  12. Wash the new rotor with brake cleaner to strip the anti-rust oil, then install it on the hub. Hold it in place with a lug nut finger-tight.
  13. Clean the bracket abutment surfaces, install new abutment clips, and apply a light film of silicone brake grease on the clips and pad ears.
  14. Install the bracket with the 21 mm bolts and torque to 130 ft-lb. Use new bolts if the originals came out damaged.
  15. Fully retract the caliper piston with the C-clamp, install the pads (wear sensor, if fitted, to the correct side per the pad kit), and clean and grease the guide pins.
  16. Set the caliper over the pads and torque the guide-pin bolts to 26 ft-lb. Verify the caliper slides freely on its pins.
  17. Repeat on the other side. Then reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 130 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  18. With the truck still up or on the ground, pump the brake pedal until it is firm, then top the reservoir to the full mark and cap it.
  19. Test drive gently, then bed the pads: about eight moderate stops from 40 to 10 mph without coming to a full stop, then drive several minutes without using the brakes to cool them.

Watch out

The 21 mm bracket bolts, 22 mm lug nuts and 130 ft-lb specs are consistent across the DS generation; the caliper guide-pin bolt head varies by production year and caliper supplier, so check whether yours takes an 8 mm hex, a 7 mm hex or a 13 mm hex-head before you start, and confirm rotor diameter against your truck's brake package.

Frequently asked

What size socket do I need for the front caliper bolts on a Ram 1500?

The caliper guide-pin bolts take an 8 mm hex bit socket on most DS trucks (some use a 7 mm hex or a 13 mm hex-head bolt), and the two caliper bracket bolts that hold the bracket to the steering knuckle take a 21 mm socket on 1/2 in drive. Lug nuts are 22 mm.

What is the front brake caliper bracket bolt torque on a 2009-2018 Ram 1500?

130 ft-lb (176 Nm) for the bracket-to-knuckle bolts and about 26 ft-lb (35 Nm) for the caliper guide-pin bolts. Lug nuts are also 130 ft-lb; retorque them after about 50 miles.

Do I have to compress the caliper piston with a special tool?

No. The front calipers on this truck are straight-push single-piston units, so a 6 in C-clamp or a basic pad spreader works. Only the rears on some trims involve a screw-in piston, and even then the fronts are push-back.

Why is my rotor stuck on the hub and how do I get it off?

Rust bonds the rotor hat to the hub face, especially in salt states. Soak the joint with penetrating oil, then strike the hat between the wheel studs with a dead blow hammer while rotating; if the rotor has two threaded jack holes, thread in bolts and tighten them evenly to press it off.
