Tools you need for spark plugs on a 2009-2018 Ram 1500

Moderate · 1-1.5 hours (3.6L/4.7L), 2-3 hours (5.7L Hemi, 16 plugs) · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 5/8 in thin-wall spark plug socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 8 mm socket for coil bolts, 3/8 in drive
  3. Swivel/wobble extension set, 3/8 in drive
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive, 10-60 ft-lb
  5. Spark plug gap gauge

On the DS Ram 1500 this is a straightforward coil-on-plug job with one twist: the 5.7L Hemi runs two spark plugs per cylinder, so it takes 16 plugs, and eight of them sit under a short wire hanging off each coil. The 3.6L Pentastar and early 4.7L V8 are conventional one-plug-per-cylinder setups. Nothing needs to come off the intake on any of them; it is coil bolts, extensions, and patience around the driver-side rear cylinders.

What varies is plug count and interval, not tool sizes. Every gas engine here uses a 5/8 in plug socket and an 8 mm coil bolt. The things people get wrong: buying 8 plugs for a Hemi, and working on a warm engine and pulling threads out of the aluminum head. Blow the wells out with air before you loosen a single plug, and start every new plug by hand.

Recommendedshop
Spark plug gap gauge
Wire-type or coin gauge, 0.020-0.060 in
Verify new plug gap (5.7L spec is 0.043 in) before installing.
Requiredshop
Compressed air or vacuum
Blow gun with long nozzle
Clear dirt out of the plug wells so nothing falls into the cylinder.
Requiredshop
Shop rags and brake cleaner

Clean oil off coil boots and around the wells.
Consumablesshop
Dielectric grease
Silicone dielectric tune-up grease
Thin film inside coil and wire boots so they don't stick or arc.
Consumablesshop
Anti-seize (optional)
Nickel anti-seize, very light film on threads only
Only if plugs are not pre-coated; keep it off the electrode and never overapply.

Differences within the 2009-2018 generation

Socket sizes are identical across 3.6L, 4.7L and 5.7L: 5/8 in plug socket, 8 mm coil bolt. The difference is count and access: 5.7L Hemi needs 16 plugs and requires pulling the short coil-to-lower-plug wire on each cylinder; 4.7L uses 8 plugs in deep wells needing a long thin-wall socket; 3.6L uses 6 plugs and requires lifting the plastic engine cover first. The 3.0L EcoDiesel has no spark plugs.

Torque specs

Spark plugs, 5.7L Hemi (aluminum head)13 ft-lb (17.5 Nm)
Spark plugs, 3.6L Pentastarverify in the service manual (roughly 13-15 ft-lb range)
Spark plugs, 4.7L V8verify in the service manual
Ignition coil mounting bolt (M6)verify in the service manual (low, around 70-90 in-lb)

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Hot aluminum heads plus plug removal is how threads get pulled.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. No battery registration is needed on this generation, but radio presets may reset.
  3. On the 3.6L, pull the plastic engine cover (it lifts off ball studs). On the 5.7L and 4.7L there is no cover; clear the engine bay of loose debris.
  4. Identify the coils. 3.6L/4.7L: one coil per cylinder. 5.7L: eight coils, each with a short plug wire that runs to the second (lower) plug on the same cylinder.
  5. Press the red lock tab and unplug each coil connector. Remove the 8 mm bolt from each coil and twist/pull the coil straight up out of the well.
  6. On the 5.7L, pull the short wire boot off the lower plug using boot pliers, twisting rather than yanking. Keep coils and wires in cylinder order.
  7. Blow out every plug well with compressed air before loosening anything so grit does not fall into the cylinder.
  8. Break each plug loose with the 5/8 in thin-wall socket and appropriate extension. If a plug feels seized, snug it back in slightly, then work it out in small back-and-forth increments.
  9. For the driver-side rear plugs, use a wobble extension around the steering shaft and brake booster; on the passenger side watch the exhaust manifold heat shield. Access through the front wheel well helps on some trucks.
  10. Compare each old plug to the new one and check the new gap (0.043 in on the 5.7L). Do not pry on fine-wire platinum/iridium tips.
  11. Start each new plug by hand using a length of hose or the rubber insert socket with no ratchet, so you feel any cross-threading.
  12. Torque each plug to spec with the torque wrench. Do not add extensions or cheater bars.
  13. Add a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot and each Hemi plug wire boot, then reinstall the boots until they click.
  14. Reinstall the coils, torque the 8 mm bolts lightly, and reconnect each connector until the lock tab snaps.
  15. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and let it idle a minute. A brief rough idle or a stored misfire code from the disconnect is normal; a persistent misfire means a boot or connector is not seated.
  16. Recheck for any tool, socket, or extension left in the engine bay before closing the hood.

Watch out

The 5/8 in plug socket and 8 mm coil bolt are correct across all DS gas engines and I am confident in the 5.7L 13 ft-lb plug spec and 0.043 in gap; verify the 3.6L and 4.7L plug torque and your exact plug part number against the FSM or parts catalog for your build year.

Frequently asked

How many spark plugs does a 5.7L Hemi Ram 1500 need?

Sixteen. The Hemi uses two plugs per cylinder for cleaner combustion. Each coil fires the upper plug directly and the lower plug through a short wire on the same cylinder.

What size socket for Ram 1500 spark plugs?

A 5/8 in (16 mm) thin-wall spark plug socket on 3/8 in drive for all gas engines in this generation. The ignition coil bolts are 8 mm.

How often should I change the plugs?

The 5.7L Hemi copper-style OE plugs are typically listed around 30,000-32,000 miles, while the 3.6L Pentastar platinum plugs go closer to 100,000 miles. Check the maintenance schedule for your specific year and plug type.

Do I need to remove the intake manifold or wheels?

No. Plugs are reachable from above on all three gas engines with wobble extensions. Some owners find the rear Hemi lower plugs easier through the front wheel well, but it is optional.
