Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2013-2017 Honda Accord

Easy · 20-45 minutes · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  2. 6 in socket extension, 1/4 in drive
  3. Flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
  4. Phillips #2 screwdriver
  5. LED flashlight or headlamp

On the 9th-gen Accord the low-beam bulb itself is a 10-second twist-and-pull job; the whole battle is getting your hand to it. Honda packed the engine bay tight, so the driver-side socket sits behind the battery and fuse box and the passenger-side socket sits behind the intake duct. Rather than skinning your knuckles reaching blind, most people pull the plastic radiator cover and the 10 mm headlight bolts and slide the housing forward a couple of inches, or loosen the intake duct on the passenger side. Either way it is a hand-tool job with no alignment work afterward as long as you don't disturb the aiming screws.

The thing people get wrong is assuming every 2013-2017 Accord takes a bulb. Halogen cars use an H11 low beam and a 9005 high beam, but EX-L, Touring and most 2016-2017 upper trims came with sealed LED low-beam projectors that have no serviceable bulb - if one of those is out, you are looking at a module or full assembly. The second mistake is handling the new halogen with bare fingers, or not reseating the rubber dust cap all the way, which lets moisture into the housing and fogs the lens.

Differences within the 2013-2017 generation

Nothing changes between the 2.4 L K24W and the 3.5 L J35Y - the bulb and all fastener sizes are identical. The real split is by trim and lighting package: halogen cars use H11 low / 9005 high, while LED-equipped EX-L, Touring and most 2016-2017 upper trims have no replaceable low-beam bulb. V6 cars are slightly tighter around the passenger-side intake duct, so loosening the 8 mm clamp helps more there.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm you have halogen headlights: look at the low-beam reflector with the light off. A clear bulb visible in a reflector bowl means halogen (H11). A sealed projector with LED emitters (EX-L, Touring, most 2016-2017 upper trims) is not serviceable by bulb.
  2. Turn the headlights off, put the key/fob away, and let the bulb cool for several minutes. Halogen capsules run hot enough to burn.
  3. Open the hood. Look at the back of the failed headlight and decide your access route: many owners can reach the passenger-side low beam directly, while the driver side is blocked by the battery and under-hood fuse box.
  4. Easier access option: remove the black plastic radiator cover/upper trim by popping its clips with a trim tool, then remove the 10 mm bolt(s) at the top and side of the headlight housing and pull the housing forward 2-4 inches. The wiring stays connected. On the passenger side you can instead loosen the 8 mm intake duct clamp and lift the duct out of the way.
  5. Alternative access: turn the front wheel to full lock away from the side you are working on, remove the Phillips screws and push-pin clips at the front of the inner fender liner, and reach the bulb from behind the wheel well.
  6. Rotate the round rubber dust cap on the low-beam socket counterclockwise (or pry its edge with a small flat screwdriver) and remove it.
  7. Press the tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the bulb base. Do not twist the connector on the bulb.
  8. Turn the H11 bulb about a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.
  9. With gloves on, unpack the new H11. Do not touch the glass; wipe it with an alcohol wipe if you do.
  10. Insert the new bulb with the tabs aligned to the slots, push it in and rotate clockwise until it locks. It should not wobble.
  11. Add a light smear of dielectric grease inside the connector, push it on until it clicks, then reseat the rubber dust cap fully so it seals all the way around - a poorly seated cap lets in moisture and fogs the lens.
  12. If you removed the housing, reinstall the 10 mm bolts snug (do not over-torque into plastic), refit the intake duct or fender liner clips, and reinstall the radiator cover.
  13. Turn on the headlights and verify both low beams work, then check the beam pattern against a wall. Replace the opposite bulb too if it is original - the second one usually fails soon after.
  14. Do the same on the other side if you are replacing both.

Watch out

H11 low beam and 9005 high beam are correct for halogen-equipped 2013-2017 Accords and all fasteners involved are 10 mm (plus an 8 mm duct clamp); confirm your trim is halogen and not factory LED before buying bulbs, and verify housing bolt torque in the service manual.

Frequently asked

What low-beam bulb does a 2013-2017 Honda Accord use?

Halogen-equipped Accords of this generation use an H11 55 W low beam; the high beam is a separate 9005 (HB3) 60 W bulb. EX-L, Touring and most 2016-2017 upper trims have sealed LED low-beam projectors with no replaceable bulb.

Do I have to remove the bumper or the whole headlight to change the bulb?

No. The bulb comes out through the back of the housing. Most people just pop the plastic radiator cover and remove the 10 mm headlight bolts to slide the housing forward a couple of inches for hand room, or reach in through the inner fender liner.

Why is the driver-side bulb so much harder than the passenger side?

The battery and under-hood fuse box sit directly behind the driver-side headlight, leaving almost no room for your hand and the connector release tab. Sliding the housing forward or going in from the wheel well is far quicker than working blind.

My new bulb burned out in a few months - what went wrong?

Usually the glass was touched with bare fingers, or the rubber dust cap wasn't seated so moisture got in. Cheap high-wattage or 'super white' bulbs also run hotter and die early; a quality standard-wattage H11 from a name brand lasts far longer.
