Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2012-2016 Honda CR-V

Easy · 20-45 minutes · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. H11 low-beam bulb (pair)
  2. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  3. Ratchet with 3-6 in extension
  4. Phillips #2 screwdriver

On the 4th-gen CR-V the low beam is a plain H11 halogen capsule that twists out of the back of the headlight housing. The bulb change itself takes 30 seconds; everything else is about creating room for your hand. The driver's side is boxed in by the battery and the intake duct, and the passenger's side by the washer fluid filler neck and the air cleaner, so you either contort an arm in from above or take 10 minutes to pull the front of the inner fender liner and work from the wheel well.

All the fasteners you'll touch are 10 mm or #2 Phillips, plus plastic push-pin clips. The high beam beside it is a 9005/HB3 and comes out the same way, so most people replace both bulbs and both sides in one go. The one thing people get wrong is grabbing the new bulb by the glass: the oil from your fingers burns onto the quartz and the bulb dies in a few months. The second most common mistake is yanking the connector by the wiring and pulling a terminal out of the plug.

Socket
10 mm 6-point, 1/4 in drive
Nearly every fastener in this area (intake duct clamp bracket, headlight mounting bolts, fender liner bolts) is 10 mm.
Requiredshop
Extension
3 in and 6 in, 1/4 in drive
Reaches the rear headlight bolt behind the bumper edge.
Requiredshop
Phillips screwdriver
#2, stubby and standard

High-beam bulb
9005 / HB3 65W
Optional: same access, so many owners do both at once.
Partsshop
Isopropyl alcohol wipes
70% or higher
Wipe the glass if you touch it, and clean the socket contacts.
Consumablesshop
Dielectric grease
Small tube
Thin smear on the connector terminals to keep moisture and corrosion out.

Differences within the 2012-2016 generation

Every 2012-2016 CR-V in this generation uses the 2.4 K24 with the same front-end layout, so tool sizes do not change by engine or trim. Halogen-equipped trims all use H11 low / 9005 high; if your car has a projector-style HID or factory LED unit (some non-US markets and later-facelift trims), the bulb and access procedure differ and the ballast must be treated as a high-voltage component.

Torque specs

Headlight housing mounting bolts (10 mm)7 ft-lb (9 Nm) - verify in the service manual
Fender liner bolts/screwsSnug by hand, roughly 4 ft-lb (5 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool for several minutes; halogen capsules run hot enough to burn.
  2. Open the hood. Decide your access route: driver's side is blocked by the battery and intake duct, passenger's side by the washer filler neck and air cleaner. For most people, removing the front section of the inner fender liner gives the best access with the least risk.
  3. Wheel-well route: chock the rear wheels, loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands, remove the wheel. Take out the Phillips screws and push-pin clips at the front of the fender liner and peel it back to expose the rear of the headlight.
  4. Engine-bay route, passenger's side: unbolt the washer fluid filler neck (10 mm) and set it aside, or loosen the intake duct, to open a hand-sized gap behind the housing.
  5. Engine-bay route, driver's side: loosen and lift the air intake duct/resonator off the airbox to clear space next to the battery. If it is still too tight, remove the three 10 mm bolts holding the headlight assembly, unplug the harness connectors, and lift the housing forward.
  6. Locate the low-beam socket: it is the larger, inboard bulb of the two on each housing (H11), with a rectangular plug pushed onto its base.
  7. Press the connector's release tab and pull the plug straight off the bulb base. Do not pull on the wires.
  8. Rotate the H11 bulb roughly a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the reflector. Some cars have a rubber boot over the base; pull that off first.
  9. Handle the new bulb by its plastic base only. If you touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol and let it dry.
  10. Insert the new bulb, align the tabs with the slots in the reflector, and turn clockwise until it stops. It should feel seated with no wobble.
  11. Add a light smear of dielectric grease to the connector and push it on until the tab clicks. Refit the rubber boot if fitted.
  12. Turn the key to accessory and switch on the low beams to confirm the new bulb works before you reassemble anything.
  13. Reinstall the intake duct, washer neck, headlight bolts (about 7 ft-lb), liner clips, wheel and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts to 80 ft-lb (108 Nm) in a star pattern if you removed the wheel.
  14. Do the other side. Replacing both low beams together keeps the color and brightness matched.
  15. Check aim against a wall or garage door at night; if you removed the headlight assembly, verify the cutoff line is level with the other side and adjust with the vertical adjuster screw if needed.

Watch out

The H11 low beam, 9005 high beam and the all-10 mm fastener set are consistent across the 2012-2016 US-market CR-V; double-check the headlight housing bolt torque in the factory service manual and confirm your bulb type against the number printed on the old capsule, since some non-US trims used HID or LED projectors.

Frequently asked

What bulb does a 2012-2016 Honda CR-V low beam use?

H11, 55W halogen. The high beam next to it is a 9005 (HB3), 65W. Long-life H11LL versions fit the same socket and typically last noticeably longer in this housing.

Do I have to remove the bumper or headlight to change the bulb?

No. You can reach the socket from the engine bay by moving the intake duct (driver's side) or the washer filler neck (passenger's side). Removing the three 10 mm headlight bolts, or peeling back the front of the inner fender liner, just makes it much easier on large hands.

Can I install LED bulbs in the CR-V low beams?

They physically fit, but this is a reflector housing designed for a halogen filament, so LEDs scatter light, create glare for oncoming drivers and often trigger a bulb-out flicker. If you want more light, a quality upgraded halogen H11 is the safer choice.

Why did my new bulb burn out quickly?

Usually the glass was touched during install, or the connector terminals are corroded and arcing. Wipe new bulbs with alcohol before fitting, clean the plug contacts, and add a little dielectric grease. Repeated failures on one side can also mean a bad ground or a chafed harness behind the housing.
