Tools you need for alternator on a 2012-2016 Honda CR-V

Moderate · 1.5-3 hours · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 14 mm socket, 1/2 in drive, for belt tensioner
  2. Long breaker bar or serpentine belt tool
  3. 12 mm and 14 mm sockets, 3/8 in drive
  4. 10 mm socket/wrench for B+ and battery terminals
  5. 3/8 in torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb

On the 4th-gen CR-V the alternator lives high on the passenger side of the K24, which makes this one of the easier alternator jobs Honda has built. Pull the intake tube and engine cover, release the automatic tensioner with a 14 mm socket on a long breaker bar, drop the B+ cable and the small regulator plug, and two bolts later the unit lifts out through the top. Removing the right front wheel and the plastic undercover is optional, but it makes the lower bolt and the belt path far easier to see.

2012-2014 cars use the K24Z6 with a 5-speed automatic; 2015-2016 switched to the K24W Earth Dreams engine with a CVT, and the alternator part number and amperage differ, so order by VIN. The one thing people get wrong is the serpentine belt: they either mis-route it or fail to seat it fully in one groove, and it self-destructs on the first drive. Photograph the routing before the belt comes off and finger-check every pulley before you crank it.

Differences within the 2012-2016 generation

Socket sizes are effectively the same across the generation: 14 mm tensioner bolt, 12 mm and 14 mm alternator mounting bolts, 10 mm B+ nut. The 2015-2016 K24W Earth Dreams engine uses a different alternator part number and slightly different accessory bracket, so order the alternator and belt by VIN rather than by model name.

Torque specs

Alternator mounting bolts (M8, 12 mm head)16 ft-lb (22 Nm)
Alternator mounting bolt (M10, 14 mm head)33 ft-lb (44 Nm)
B+ output terminal nut7 ft-lb (9.8 Nm)

Battery terminal clamp nuts4 ft-lb (5.5 Nm)
Front wheel lug nuts80 ft-lb (108 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10 mm wrench and tuck it aside.
  2. Remove the plastic engine cover/intake tube: loosen the throttle-body and airbox clamps with a flat screwdriver, unclip the breather hose and MAF/IAT connector, and pull the tube out. Remove the airbox lid or full box (10 mm bolts) if you need more room.
  3. Optional but helpful: raise the front right corner, support it on a jack stand, remove the wheel (19 mm lugs) and the splash shield/engine undercover clips to see the lower alternator bolt and belt path.
  4. Sketch or photograph the serpentine belt routing before removing it.
  5. Put the 14 mm socket on a long breaker bar onto the automatic tensioner pulley bolt, rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Let the tensioner return slowly.
  6. Peel back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the 10 mm nut, and lift the heavy charging cable off the stud. Keep the nut and washer.
  7. Unplug the alternator's small voltage-regulator connector by pressing its lock tab. Free any harness clips attached to the alternator body or bracket.
  8. Remove the two alternator mounting bolts (typically 12 mm head upper/pivot and 14 mm head lower, sizes can swap by year). Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out.
  9. Work the alternator up and out through the top of the engine bay, rotating it to clear the A/C lines and coolant hoses. Do not force it against the radiator fan shroud.
  10. Compare the old and new units: pulley diameter, plug type, stud size and mounting ear spacing must match.
  11. Set the new alternator in place, start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminum block/bracket, then torque the M8 to 16 ft-lb and M10 to 33 ft-lb.
  12. Reinstall the B+ cable (clean the ring terminal first) and torque the nut to 7 ft-lb, reseat the rubber boot, and click the small connector back on.
  13. Install the new or original serpentine belt following your photo, making sure it is seated in every groove, then release the tensioner and double-check every pulley.
  14. Reinstall the undercover, splash shield, wheel (80 ft-lb, star pattern), airbox and intake tube. Reconnect the negative battery cable last.
  15. Start the engine and check for belt squeal or wobble. With a multimeter across the battery, you should see roughly 13.5-14.7 V at idle. Reset the clock and radio presets; no scan tool or battery registration is required.

Watch out

Sizes here (10 mm battery/B+ nut, 12 mm and 14 mm alternator bolts, 14 mm tensioner bolt, 19 mm lugs) match the K24 in this generation, but confirm which mounting bolt is which on your specific year before you buy a single socket, since the fastener mix changed slightly with the 2015 Earth Dreams engine.

Frequently asked

Do I have to remove the wheel or drop anything to get the alternator out of a 4th-gen CR-V?

No. On the 2.4L the alternator comes out through the top of the engine bay after you remove the intake tube. Pulling the right front wheel and the plastic undercover just gives you better access to the lower bolt and the belt.

What size socket turns the belt tensioner on a 2012-2016 CR-V 2.4?

A 14 mm 6-point socket on the tensioner pulley center bolt. Use a 1/2 in drive breaker bar or a dedicated serpentine belt tool; a short 3/8 in ratchet usually will not give you enough leverage in that space.

Do I need to program or register the new alternator?

No. There is no battery or alternator registration on this generation. Just reconnect the battery, and expect to reset the clock, radio presets and possibly relearn the idle by letting it sit at idle for a couple of minutes.

How do I confirm the alternator is actually bad before replacing it?

With the engine off, battery voltage should be about 12.5 V; at idle with the new or old alternator working you should see roughly 13.5-14.7 V. If it stays near 12.4 V or lower with the engine running, check the B+ cable nut and fusible link first, then suspect the alternator.
