Tools you need for tire rotation on a 2013-2018 Toyota RAV4

Easy · 30-45 minutes · Updated 2026-09-28
Must-have tools
  1. 21 mm lug nut socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. Floor jack, 2 ton minimum
  3. Jack stands (pair or four)
  4. Torque wrench, 1/2 in drive, 76 ft-lb

Rotating tires on the XA40 RAV4 is about as simple as car maintenance gets. Every trim, FWD or AWD, gas or hybrid, uses five 21 mm lug nuts per wheel, and the pinch welds behind the front wheels and ahead of the rear wheels are the designated jack points. The only real decision is the pattern: with standard non-directional tires, use rearward cross; with directional tires, swap front to rear on the same side only.

The mistake people make is the final tightening. Shops routinely hit these nuts with an impact gun, and RAV4 owners then complain about brake shudder, which is often just warped front rotors from uneven clamping. Torque to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern with a real torque wrench, then re-check after a hundred miles. Also resist greasing the studs; a thin smear of anti-seize belongs on the hub center only, if anywhere.

ItemType
Tire pressure gauge
Digital or dial, 0-60 psi
Check and set pressures before and after rotation; door jamb label usually calls for 32 psi front and rear.
Requiredshop
Breaker bar
1/2 in drive, 18-24 in
Loosen lug nuts while the wheels are still on the ground, especially if last tightened by an impact gun.
Recommendedshop
Lug nut socket
21 mm 6-point, 1/2 in drive, thin wall
Fits all XA40 RAV4 lug nuts; 6-point thin wall protects alloy wheel pockets.
Requiredshop
Floor jack
2 ton minimum, low profile helpful
Lift the vehicle at the pinch-weld jack points, one corner or one side at a time.
Requiredshop
Pinch weld jack pad
Slotted rubber puck for pinch weld
Keeps the jack saddle from crushing the RAV4's pinch-weld seam.
Recommendedshop
Jack stands
2 ton pair (4 if lifting whole car)
Support the vehicle safely while wheels are off; never work under a jack alone.
Requiredshop
Wheel chocks
Rubber or plastic pair
Block the wheels remaining on the ground before lifting.
Safetyshop
Torque wrench
1/2 in drive, 25-250 ft-lb range
Tighten lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern; overtightening warps rotors.
Requiredshop
Wire brush
Small steel brush
Clean rust and debris off the hub face so the wheel seats flat.
Recommendedshop
Tread depth gauge
Inch/mm probe type
Record tread depth at each corner to track wear and decide on rotation direction.
Recommendedshop
Anti-seize or brake grease
Thin film on hub center only, never on studs or seats
Prevents the wheel from rust-welding to the hub, a common issue in salt-belt RAV4s.
Consumablesshop
Mechanic's gloves
Nitrile-coated
Keeps brake dust and grime off hands.

Differences within the 2013-2018 generation

No difference. The 2.5 L 2AR-FE, the 2.5 L hybrid (2016+ RAV4 Hybrid), and all wheel sizes from 17 to 18 inch use 21 mm lug nuts at 76 ft-lb.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level pavement, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels that will stay on the ground. Do not rotate tires on a slope or on soft ground.
  2. Note current tire pressures and tread depths at each corner so you can compare wear later.
  3. With the wheels still on the ground, break each lug nut loose about a quarter turn using the breaker bar and 21 mm socket.
  4. Position the floor jack under the pinch-weld jack point (the reinforced notch behind the front wheel or ahead of the rear wheel) with a slotted pad, and lift until the tire clears the ground.
  5. Place a jack stand under the pinch weld or the subframe/control arm mount and lower the jack onto it. Repeat so that at least both wheels you are swapping are supported.
  6. Remove the five lug nuts and pull the wheel straight off. If it is stuck to the hub from corrosion, tap the tire sidewall with a rubber mallet or kick the tread from behind.
  7. Wire-brush rust off the hub face and apply only a very thin film of anti-seize to the hub center hub, not to the studs, nut seats, or wheel mounting face.
  8. Rotate non-directional tires rearward cross: left rear goes to left front, right rear to right front, left front crosses to right rear, right front crosses to left rear. Directional tires stay on their own side, front to rear only.
  9. Hang the wheel on the studs, thread all five nuts by hand until snug, then snug them in a star pattern with the wheel just touching the ground.
  10. Lower the vehicle fully, then torque all five nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star (criss-cross) pattern. Go around a second time to confirm.
  11. Set all four tires to the pressure on the driver's door jamb label (typically 32 psi cold on 17 and 18 inch wheels). If the TPMS light is on, drive a few minutes for it to clear.
  12. Re-check lug nut torque after 50-100 miles of driving; nuts commonly settle after a wheel swap.

Watch out

The 21 mm lug nut size and 76 ft-lb torque apply to all 2013-2018 RAV4 trims including the hybrid and are consistent across the generation; confirm pressures on your own door jamb label since 17 and 18 inch fitments can differ.

Frequently asked

What size socket are the lug nuts on a 2013-2018 RAV4?

21 mm, five per wheel, across the entire XA40 generation including the hybrid. Use a 6-point thin-wall socket on alloy wheels so you do not scuff the nut pockets.

What is the lug nut torque for a RAV4 XA40?

76 ft-lb (103 Nm), tightened in a star pattern with the vehicle's weight on the tire. Re-check after 50-100 miles.

Do I need to reset the TPMS after rotating tires on a RAV4?

No. The XA40's direct TPMS does not track sensor position for warning purposes, so a plain rotation needs no relearn. You only register sensor IDs when sensors or wheels are replaced, which requires a Techstream or compatible TPMS tool.

What rotation pattern should I use on an AWD RAV4?

Same as FWD: rearward cross for non-directional tires (rears straight to the front, fronts crossed to the rear). AWD makes matched tread depth more important, so keep all four within roughly 2/32 in of each other.
